Match scorecard

Rahul Dravid hit the winning runs as India clinched their first Test win in Australia for 22 years.
**
The tourists started the day on 37-0 - chasing 230 - and, despite looking nervous as they lost six wickets, finally edged home.

After scoring 233 in the first innings, Dravid was again the hero as he battled to 72 not out.

Australia were dealt a blow during the morning session when Jason Gillespie was forced off with a groin strain.

It was Gillespie who took the final day’s opening wicket of Akash Chopra before Virender Sehwag was stumped soon after, reducing India to 79-2.

With Sachin Tendulkar struggling to make an impact the home side looked capable of making further inroads.

Australia will come back fighting but we will take confidence from this

But just two balls into his second spell and with lunch looming, Gillespie was struck down by a groin strain.

Dravid was lucky to escape when he was dropped either side of lunch, first by Adam Gilchrist and then Ricky Ponting.

Australian hopes were raised when Tendulkar was trapped lbw by Stuart MacGill soon after lunch.

And Skipper Sourav Ganguly was the next to go, caught by Simon Katich off the bowling of Andy Bichel to leave India on 170-4 and under pressure.

But Dravid came to India’s rescue again, and alongside VVS Laxman he steered his side to 217-4 at tea.

Laxman then holed out to Bichel with a rash stroke when just nine runs were needed, and Parthiv Patel was bowled by MacGill with victory one run away.

But an exhausted looking Dravid finally put the Australians away with a flashing drive for four that sparked celebration in the Indian camp.

It was only Australia’s second loss at home under outgoing skipper Steve Waugh. They have lost only eight of their 60 Tests at home in the last 10 years.

India’s last win in Australia came at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in February 1981.

Well Played India...ITs nice to see Aussies loosing finally by a team which was not superior to them..Now assuies cannot whine that There MCgrath or Warne or Lee wwere not playing. India can say as well.. our Zaheer wasnt playing.. ;)/....

I am up with indian tem supporters in there celebration..Congrats to all..

Congratulations to India, I really cant tell how does it feel to finally see Australia losing a test specially at home. India has superceded all expectations. Dravid is the man :k:. I saw the match live and after Tendulkar’s departure, aisa laga that india will crumble but they did not :k:

Australians got a nasty slap in their faces and i feel for Waugh as his last series is turning into a nightmare. Yes they were hampered on a last ady when Gillespie walked off after a superb spell but thier depth finally was no where to be seen.

Thank you to all the Pakistanis who are sincere in congratulating us.

Abhi na jao chor kar, ki dil abhi bhara nahin...

Jerablade who will entertain us with the comedy act if you leave man? :)

I have the feeling that many Pakistanis here, while not being too enthusiastic about India's win, are nevertheless extremely happy that the arrogant Aussies got a thump on the backside. :)

If you read the news everyone all over the world is pretty relieved that this could be the end of Aussie domination. If we can do it, so can others.

I agree. As I said earlier This is a great thing for cricket. Any single team dominating any sports isnt good.
I hope Indian sustain the momentum and win series which is not entirely impossible considring that last test is on spinning tracks of Sydney.

Apparently Brian Lara talked to the Indian players yesterday and told them they can do it, they must do it! Here’s an interesting article.

Painful loss will force firmer focus
December 17, 2003

AUSTRALIA will be a better side for this massive kick in the backside no one saw coming.

Swallowing the indignity of being the culprits in the biggest comeback Test cricket has seen in a five-day Test will not be easy but at the very least it will lead to a firmer focus from a side who have had curious flat spots in the first two Tests.

There are lessons everywhere, least of all to appreciate how good the side has been for so long.

We’ve all been spoiled. Enjoy the good times while they last because you can bet your house that Ricky Ponting, through no fault of his own, will average nowhere near the 80 per cent winning Test record that Steve Waugh accumulated in the four years in which Australia dominated - make that crushed - the world.

It is also important to remember the world is not coming to an end. Glenn McGrath, Brett Lee and Shane Warne will be back but with the bulk of the side entering their early-to-mid 30s we appear to have seen the best of a great generation.

Among the issues spotlighted in this game are:

  • The spin out: Stuart MacGill had a rare off game in Adelaide which he should be forgiven for because he has been so good elsewhere throughout his career.

But it is clear the Indians have no fear of spin bowling. Their footwork is a joy to watch as they moved well forward or back and most of them can read the ball out of the hand.

Most other nations around the world crumble at the thought of facing Australian leg-spinners. Indians eat them for breakfast to the point where Australia must consider whether MacGill or another paceman would be a better option in Melbourne.

The Test again reinforces the point that Adelaide is an over-rated slow bowling venue.

MacGill and Warne have struggled to take wickets there throughout their careers.

  • Dravid-Laxman: The absence of McGrath and Warne has hurt Australia in many ways but especially in their inability to remove match-shaping duo VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid.

Warne has dismissed Dravid nine times in international cricket - more than any other bowler - while McGrath has dismissed Laxman seven times, also a record.

Against Warne, Dravid doesn’t get the room to play his silky drives through the offside while McGrath’s bounce has at times tested Laxman.

Dravid has arguably the best technique in world cricket.

  • The long innings: Australian batsmen have been spoilt over the past decade.

They haven’t had to get used to spending four or five sessions in the field chasing leather and have been generally fresh when batting.

Fatigue played a part in Australia’s second innings collapse on Monday. But Australia must get used to this.

The days of the easy ride are over. Now that India have provided a model of how to beat Australia other teams will try and storm the fortress.

One of the reasons why so many Australian batsmen are averaging over 50 is that the bowlers have done so well the batsmen have been batting with fresh, clear minds.

  • Complacency-hunger: Australia hate the sound of the “c” word but it can affect the strongest mind.

By their own admission the Australians were flat in Brisbane and their batting in the second innings in Adelaide had a strong whiff of false bravado about it.

India have been the hungrier side in this series. You only have to see the way the players link arms after a dismissal in the field.

  • The fading aura: If India win this series, look for other sides to be more successful.

Aura’s are powerful things. Teams used to be beaten before they landed in Australia.

But those days appear to be coming to an end. Even Zimbabwe put up a fight in October.

Teams are starting to play the ball and not the man.

The Daily Telegraph

FB- I think they should try to win at Melbuorne, considering India won it’s last test there.

Yes we should but Melbourne's wicket of 1981 and 2003 is different.
But I wont mind even if we came out of that test still maintaining 1-0 lead.Sydney would be a treat I bet,

McGrath out of Test series **

AUSTRALIAN fast bowler Glenn McGrath has reportedly been ruled out of the remaining two Tests against India.

The Daily Telegraph reported that McGrath’s surgically repaired left ankle has failed to heal properly after two operations to remove bone spurs.

McGrath is unavailable to play for NSW against Tasmania at the SCG on Friday in what was meant to be his comeback game.

He was forced to cancel a net session today at the SCG and NSW team physiotherapist Pat Farhart said the ankle was still not right.

“It basically hasn’t settled, it’s still swelling up,” Farhart told the newspaper of the ankle.

“He is still getting pain when he bowls.”

The pair agreed a more realistic return date for McGrath would be the Blues’ Pura Cup clash against Victoria in Newcastle on January 9.

The news is a blow to Australia’s hopes of coming back in the series, with fast bowling resources severely depleted.

Jason Gillespie limped off Adelaide Oval today with a groin injury and Brad Williams is also in doubt for Melbourne after damaging his left shoulder in the second Test.

However, speedster Brett Lee is expected to earn a Test call-up on Friday, when selectors finalise the third Test squad, after coming through unscathed against Victoria last weekend.
