NEW DELHI: India has deployed its top fighter jets in Kashmir, officials and a report said on Wednesday.

At least six Russian-built Sukhoi-30MKI jets, capable of carrying nuclear weapons, have been deployed at Avantipura air force base near Srinagar.

The Kashmir deployment comes amid strains in the India-Pakistan peace process, with New Delhi accusing Islamabad of renewed support for cross-border militancy and ceasefire violations along the Line of Control.

The base is equipped with crash-prone MiG-21 jets, which India first imported in the 1960s.

“The Sukhois had been held deep down our strategic corridor in (the western Indian city of) Pune, and their deployment in Kashmir will address any perceived threat,” an air force official said on condition he was not named.

“But this is a defensive stance,” the officer said.

Air Marshal P K Barbora, commander of India’s Western Air Command, was quoted in a newspaper as saying the deployment was “temporary.”

India acquired 60 Sukhoi-30s in 2001. The twin-seater frontline jets can carry eight tonnes of armaments including nuclear bombs and cruise at a speed of 3,200 kilometres an hour.

The air force official said the Sukhois would patrol Indian borders extending up to China and fly across Kashmir’s rugged Kargil peaks, where India and Pakistan fought a mini-war in 1999.

The Indian Air Force, the world’s fourth largest, is also planning to deploy up to 40 Sukhoi jets in the northeast close to the border with China, the official added.

Interesting…hopefully they won’t cross the border of either China and/or Pakistan and turn an ugly situation into something beyond belief…

Meanwhile COAS Kayani will be in China, hopefully to bring home J10s so they can be used as an equal deterrent against all threats.

india, i hope, is not totally void of intelligence. so therefore it must think it has some kind protection from pak nukes when it kicks off to be making strategic adjustments like this. i highly doubt india has this protection

it is publicly known that india is involved in this current conspiracy against pakistan, so even if india does not take part in the actual raids on pakistan , when they come, india will be hit. so assuredly it will be hit, and hit repeatedly. over and over again

india has already earned the right to be pakistan no1 target if anything does go wrong by supporting the conspiracy thus far. the result will be that all its former glory will be a nuclear wasteland. to think, any borrowed anti missile/aircraft system will protect it from the will of the pakistani armed forces to deliver its come-upance to indian cities, is absolutely stupid.

india may have, previously, dodged this thought as it approved plans which do not take into account indias national interest but these days the realisation should be stark. india will be a big loser of any major anti pak operation. so much so that it is imperative that it wakes up soon

With the predominantly large Hindu population looking down on them, (as hooda just demonstrated here), I dont think they are any better off. Sometimes they get a Gujrat like debacle to put them back in their place. And to make matters worse, the instigators of such events are elected with flying colors and made ministers again.

So wheres the proof that they are more open minded than Pakistanis, or is it something that you just personally believe in? What views will you offer, based on the fact that Muslims were being baked alive inside ovens in Gujrat not too long ago? India might claim to be a secular country, but there's plenty of discrimination going on against non-Hindus. Just goto old-delhi, the shanty Muslim dominated areas you can tell there's a huge caste barrier that exists over there. Merely having a president whose Muslim a few years ago doesnt mean you are doing wonders for your minority (not to mention the fact that he as much Muslim as I am buddhist). Pakistan doesnt claim its a secular country, it was formed on a religious idealogy, and we dont make big claims about our 1% or less minority. India however claims that its a secular country, and this secular mask will come under severe criticism if its not living upto its projected image. Just look at how the Hindus were allocated land in Kashmir, whereas one of your top paid spokesman for Muslims, Shabana Azmi could not rent a flat in Mumbai because of her religion.

As for Tariq Akhtar's post, yes i think it's a phased transition. And i wouldn't be surprised if it also serves a dual purpose of keeping a close watch on the borders. It's the right of India.

Everytime u people bring gujrat .In 60 years tell me how many such incidences have happened and why its only hindus have to take the blame everytime? cant it be other party's fault sometimes?
There might be disrimination at the lowest level but not at the middle or upper class. I am from bhopal where the ratio is 70-30% hindu-muslim and i havnt seen any problem till now.
the problem with pakistan is they cant see indian muslims favouring india.sabki usme aag lag jaati hain.

not quiet...SU MKI is a stratergic aircraft ...u cannot have such high assets near an international border...the base can be easily targetted by cruise missiles from across the borders...

And gujrat riots was because of hindus were burned alive in a train. I dont say that it was done by muslims lekin aag lagne ke liye chingrai kafi hain.some extremists took advantage of that and tell me how many indians are proud of that incident?

those people are illitrate so i dont expect much of them but you will rarely find any educated indian doing such thing but i have seen tons of educated pakistanis doing the same. Go to religious forum u will find tons of things.
The bottom line is people should be educated and so they think of their own and make good decisions.

Tell me how many times indians have created anti pakistani thread here? see this world forum where 90% of thread are anti india and show me what crap we have written when anything positive is said about pakistan.

India runs on the oil produced by Islamic nations.

Pakistanis are probably more trigger happy (not a good thing) when it comes to nukes than Indians, and large parts of both India and Pakistan would end up being extremely rich in thorium in the aftermath. Israel occupying Saudi Arabia is again almost impossible, you obviously have no idea to the capabilities of the IDF, when size becomes a limiting factor. Not to mention the fact that Israel would never get involved in such a conflict. America taking out Iran, that will probably only happen when the Saudis grow extremely tired of the Shiites in Tehran.

Saudi royal family and the Americans share HUGE business interests, with the Saudis having a huge stake in the US markets.

Over three quarters of the Indian diaspora of whom the majority are Hindus, reside in MUSLIM countries, such as UAE, Malaysia, Kuwait etc.

USA will be a much better friend to countries such as KSA, Egypt, Turkey etc than with India. India cant bring down anything at the moment, (yes not even Pakistan) not without setting itself back 30+ years.

Not to even mention China who will be competing on a larger scale with India for global resources, thus wanting to keep countries with such resources under its influence or an influence which is counter to its competition, in this case India. Current examples would be China striking deals in Nigeria, Sudan, countering US efforts of influence in the region. There's tons of cold war examples too.

Please study some geopolitics, international relations or any political science before coming out with baseless and inaccurate rubbish.
