I am not talking historically. I am just referring to the current situation. Under present circumstances, yes its great to have goodwill with Iran/Afghanistan but the fact that india does not need to be the neighboring country of those nations is a great advantage.
I want to say though that India needs a balance of tension/peace atmosphere and Pakistan becoming a broken state is also not in India's advantage (for the same reason of being a buffer) as India needs a strong buffer.
Those who dont live in Pakistan cant even fathom the frustration of seeing idiots from the west flooding the country and spreading drugs and arms. All that we see in Pakistan (lawlessness and more) started after Afghan/USSR war. Pakistan is acting like a filter, holding this kachraa to ever flow into India. Pakistan's strengths is only going to favor india if anything.

See again, I am just staying in the present. Majority of US southern states were actually part of Mexico. Does that mean that Mexicans have right to enter those states illegally and run their drug and weapon operations. No, right? Sindh was part of India. Indians can make the same argument and run havoc in Sindh.
^^Besides, there are LOTS of people pretending to be someone else on the internet. In any case, I am sure if the Afghanis thought Pakistan was so unpalatable, millions of eternal “refugees” would not be enjoying Pakistani hospitality for this long. Granted Pakistanis in general have a soft corner for their Afghani brethren and there is certainly a concept of Muslim brotherhood but Pakistan is a poor nation with scarce resources. Despite that, those Afghanis have made their little kabuls everywhere most notably in Karachi but they can be found in almost every city of the country; there was an interesting story a couple of days back that even Raymond Davis was on his way back after collecting intelligence from the “northern suburbs of the city where Afghan refugees live” when he was apprehended in Lahore!
