India and Pakistan are Stronger Together

**Beena Sarwar

Loosening cultural, travel and trade restrictions is a vital first step to rediscovering our two countries’ shared heritage**

India and Pakistan may be neighbours but it’s surprising how little they really know about each other. Their rich common heritage is easily forgotten amid mutual baiting and negative stereotyping, and it’s difficult to imagine them ever being truly at peace until these obstacles have been overcome.

“I’m really surprised to see so many women … I thought you would be all covered in burqas,” said a journalist at the Indian Women’s Press Club when the Pakistani contingent arrived last April on a visit (a joint initiative for peace by the Times of India and Pakistan’s Jang media group).

Indians who visit Pakistan are invariably pleasantly surprised by the openness, helpfulness and hospitality of Pakistanis. It is hard for them to believe there is so much vibrant art, fashion, music, dance, media, literature and theatre. They are moved by the outstanding work that people are doing, often voluntarily, in fields ranging from women’s and human rights to education and medical care.

The few theatres we have in Pakistan remain solidly booked. Indian journalists who saw a local production of the West End hit musical Mama Mia in Lahore were stunned by the talent, and by the slickness of the production by the group which had put on Chicago the previous year.

But far too few opinion-makers from India and Pakistan are able to visit the other country. Trapped in a long history of hostilities, our governments are reluctant to grant visas to each other’s citizens, even journalists. Their reciprocal protocol only allows two journalists from the other country to live and work in their capital cities, Islamabad and New Delhi - and they must obtain special permission to go elsewhere.

Despite the shared border, languages, food, music and cultural traditions, we don’t even have the option of a tourist visa for each other’s citizens. When visas are granted, they are reminiscent of the cold war era tendency to grant city-specific, single entry visas limited typically to a fortnight or a month. Visitors must report to the police within 24 hours of arrival and departure.

Our cell phones, on roaming anywhere else in the world, stop working when we step into each other’s country.

We’ve banned each other’s newspapers and television news channels - ridiculous in this age of internet access. India doesn’t allow Pakistan’s cooking, sports or entertainment TV shows or live link-ups to Pakistani TV channels. Pakistan is more relaxed on this score and allows India’s extravagant soap operas - but many here (particularly in the military and the bureaucracy) still operate on the premise that India is enemy number one.

Even as Pakistan reels from unprecedented floods that submerged one-fifth of the country and affected 20 million people, officials are dithering over allowing relief and aid workers from India.

European states came together despite a long history of bloodshed and hostility because it made economic sense to do so. For India and Pakistan too, co-operation and trade make sense. Businessmen and women recognise this, and they endorsed economic ties at a large meeting in May organised by Aman ki Asha.

In an age of nuclear weapons and unmanned drones how much sense does it make to keep armies amassed at the borders? Our people - one-fifth of the world’s poor - need schools, hospitals, shelters, infrastructure, not more missiles and bombs.

It is only by opening the India-Pakistan border to each other’s travellers, to commerce and to our shared culture that we can combat the negative stereotypes that feed mutual hostility and militarism in the subcontinent.

feel like indians and pakistanis really don’t know much about each other. most of the opinions are based on myths or stereotypes on both sides of the border.

Re: India and Pakistan are Stronger Together

Very true :k:

Re: India and Pakistan are Stronger Together

Yes they can be stronger together as long as they dont get involved in religious, cultural and country fights.

Re: India and Pakistan are Stronger Together

yes but what similarities do china and pakistan have religiously, culturally, and i don't know what you mean by country fights...? chino-pak relation is pretty strong regardless of that.

Re: India and Pakistan are Stronger Together

yes but the thing is pak and china never had a fight...they have always been friend (as far as i know).

but with india we stand this long fight which we all know about (though it has been toned down but its still there).

by country fights i means ppl saying "oh you (pakistanis-indians) cant do anything on your own, always need a sahara"...now such statements can cause fights on basis of the country and probably would lead to religious fights. i think to be able to work together strongly public support is also needed.

Re: India and Pakistan are Stronger Together

I agree, both countries should work on soft borders, if Germany, France, Spain and UK can have soft borders, then why SAARC country have the same...

but this need commitment to provide better lifestyles to the people on both sides, currently, it each country have a scape-goat... anything goes wrong in either country, they blame to other... and then we go back at square one....

the region of South Asia was economically a power, the combined GDP of all Europe was less than what the region had... it can still do the same.. but the ego and incompetency won't allow either side to accomplish this...

Re: India and Pakistan are Stronger Together

soft borders between india and pakistan arent an option unless there is a significant base of economic interdependence thru trade. else you are merely enabling "miscreants" who have nothing to lose. nepal/india/bhutan have soft borders implemented within SAARC already.

Re: India and Pakistan are Stronger Together

^^

If the general economic indicators improve, the miscreants on both sides of the borders will be defeated by this...

whereas, if we try to clear up miscreants before doing anything to ease tensions between the two, without taking any concrete steps in order to boost trade relations, then the peace between the two would be a dream which may never come true...

Both countries can have soft borders to ease trade and tourism and on the same note, it is job of security agencies to keep thing checked on their side... but as per your tone and logic, nothing positive is possible in near future between the two

Re: India and Pakistan are Stronger Together

india’s culture is pretty close to pakistan’s culture hence so many similarities other than the religion of the majority.

plus in india and pakistan a majority of the people want peace and better relations. only extremists would want these tensions between the two

Re: India and Pakistan are Stronger Together

true.

Re: India and Pakistan are Stronger Together

They share a common fear/dislike of India :)

Re: India and Pakistan are Stronger Together

why would gigantic china be fearing india though?

Re: India and Pakistan are Stronger Together

Becuase China and India are both very gigantic and India might soon outgrow the gigantic China... both countries see Pakistan as a deciding factor, China see's Paksitan as the ally in times when India gets too big.

But both countries forget that Pakistan is not any ordinary country it is a little powerhouse in terms of strategic potential... it holds the position that medieval Switzerland used to hold.

Re: India and Pakistan are Stronger Together

China is the dominant country in Asia, and India is its only competitor. Add to that India's better relations with the west and you have enough reasons for China to consider India as a threat.

Re: India and Pakistan are Stronger Together

As if China has no relation with the west? :5:

Both countries are fierce competitors.

Re: India and Pakistan are Stronger Together

well the real china isn't as gigantic as the map of china looks. take out tibet and the turkic republics under siege by the commis, and china is medium-sized country far away from india.

Re: India and Pakistan are Stronger Together

Agreed :k:

And Queer your right about the Turkic peoples from Mongolai to Uighyur who are all opressed by the Han thugs… just like Kashmiris and India :hehe:

But at least in China they are autonomous, in Kashmir India is not as kind… :bummer: If it was my quarrel would be over… :@:

Re: India and Pakistan are Stronger Together

slippery slope pal.. balochis of pakistan and iran, kurds of turkey and iraq.. hazaras of afghanistan.. it is one long list of nangu pangus in this hamaam..

just having the name "autonomous" in the province's name does not mean much. kinda like azad kashmir - which has no azadi, or kashmir. makes me laugh every time..

Re: India and Pakistan are Stronger Together

There is a difference between “no relations” and “better relations”

Re: India and Pakistan are Stronger Together

Yeah but I support all of them... The Balochis are deserving of thier own state if Pakistan dissapoints them, likewise the Hazaras and the Kurds, the state should be for the benefit of all if the state fails the people then the people have every right to do whats best to preserve them.

P A K I S T A N

was a name than incoporated the Baloch tribesmen but lately I know how they feel and everything on that matter, however they like Kashmiri and Uighur are fellow Muslims and offourse I will speak for thier rights... likewise I will speak up for Nagas in Assam and the other Indian oppressed people even though they are Hindu.

No bhai I love Pakistan but that dont mean I am a blind nationalist at heart I am a tribesman and I know what it's like to be threatened by a state and all it's cowardly power... Paksitan needs to sort itself out like India. :)

This has been a very helpfull conversation.
