In order to avert this many lives lost - Pakistan should start The Kalabagh Bunn!

Hopefully the opposition to this Project at this critical moment would have subsided by now…

Kalabagh Bunn/Dam would have averted most severe downstream flooding!

Don’t you agree?

Re: In order to avert this many lives lost - Pakistan should start The Kalabagh Bunn!

I do, but i ANP and PPP are still opposing it.

Re: In order to avert this many lives lost - Pakistan should start The Kalabagh Bunn!

Many lives could have been saved and many people could have been saved from becoming homeless if this dam was built. But the corrupt government will never allow this damn to be made. There should be some sort of protest.

Kalabagh Dam could have averted destruction of floods, says Gilani

  • PM says govt will go ahead with Kalabagh Dam only if there is consensus on the project

  • Says foreign aid will be distributed equally among affected areas

Re: In order to avert this many lives lost - Pakistan should start The Kalabagh Bunn!

its not only government its also people from Khyber Pakhtoon Khwa. =]

Re: In order to avert this many lives lost - Pakistan should start The Kalabagh Bunn!

This is not true. The most of lives lost were upstream Kalabagh Dam place - up in the north in Pakhtun Khawa. In the places downstream there was more crop and property losses than lives.

And then there were live losses in the DG Khan and Sibi areas beacuse of the rains in Balouchistan.

In September 1992 there were heaviest of the rains in Kashmir for 72 hours. They had to open all the gates of Mangla dam to save it. That resulted in many loss of lives in upper Punjab then.

Re: In order to avert this many lives lost - Pakistan should start The Kalabagh Bunn!

As long as this "DEMOCRACY" is in place, nothing can be built. Not even a single road, what to talk of a dam. They are there not to build anything, but destroy.

Re: In order to avert this many lives lost - Pakistan should start The Kalabagh Bunn!

I don't think anything is wrong with democracy but we sure need to change our political system, get rid of all the bad apples, and mend our morals as a country.

Re: In order to avert this many lives lost - Pakistan should start The Kalabagh Bunn!

It wouldn’t have made any difference, so far 80% of all deaths were in K-P and that was upstream of the KB site again it wouldn’t have made a difference to Balochistan either. Bhasha and Munda dam would have lessened the effect but not stopped it..

KBD would have caused more flooding: expert

  • Former IRSA chief says dam is not a flood-control project

  • ANP says dam would have done immense harm to KP, Sindh

By Iqbal Khattak

PESHAWAR: The Kalabagh Dam – had it been built – would have caused flooding rather than averting it, a former chairman of the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) said on Wednesday, while responding to Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani’s recent statement about the dam.

“The dam’s effect on floods would have been contrary to what the prime minister claimed,” said Fatehullah Khan Gandapur, who headed IRSA from 1993 to 1998.

The KP leadership has criticised the PM’s statement, and Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain termed the project “a dead horse”. “Kalabagh dam is not a flood-control project,” Gandapur said while talking to Daily Times on Wednesday. “It is a run-of-the-river project and its design has to be changed if we want to make it a flood-control project,” he said.

Gandapur said the dam’s construction would have caused reverse flow in the Kabul River, submerging Nowshera district and water-logging the entire Peshawar valley. “Consultants have called the dam’s design a failure,” he said.

Re: In order to avert this many lives lost - Pakistan should start The Kalabagh Bunn!

^^ Yes, KP (Kalam, Upper Swat, Charsada) might have not been saved, but Down-Stream and Sindh in Particular could have been saved and benefited for few years...

Re: In order to avert this many lives lost - Pakistan should start The Kalabagh Bunn!

There India is building dams and saving their country from Flood n other things here our crap politicians r fighting

Kala bagh dam was Rejected by the Pakhtuns now see the flood there

Re: In order to avert this many lives lost - Pakistan should start The Kalabagh Bunn!

^^ the Dam is rejected purely on Political grounds... by the politicians, i am sure if Kiyani takes over today and start building the dam none of these spine-less politicians would be able to protest..

Re: In order to avert this many lives lost - Pakistan should start The Kalabagh Bunn!

what about downstream kalabagh??? a lot that has happend in mianwali, lower punjab, and now happening in sindh????

Re: In order to avert this many lives lost - Pakistan should start The Kalabagh Bunn!

Read post 12 above

Re: In order to avert this many lives lost - Pakistan should start The Kalabagh Bunn!

people in Pakistan mostly follow ethnic parties blindly. most of those who follow ANP are against it without knowing any technicalities. while in past, whenever there had been any debate on this dam on technical grounds, it always proved the most suitable site for a dam in Pakistan.

Re: In order to avert this many lives lost - Pakistan should start The Kalabagh Bunn!

As I said there is property and crop losses there and less human lives lost there as compared to the Northern Pakistan. And as for the people of Sindh, they always look for flood in the Indus as it gives them temporary loss but long term benefits.

Re: In order to avert this many lives lost - Pakistan should start The Kalabagh Bunn!

^^ Can you tell us the size of the property and crops loss???

Re: In order to avert this many lives lost - Pakistan should start The Kalabagh Bunn!

so you mean that because Kalabagh could not have saved the lives of people who died in KP and because people in southern sindh seek flood for their benefits, its ok to not make the dam, and let HUGGGEEEEE crops wasted, and property drowned and people die... wow you are smart

and by the way, at least 50% of this water could have been stored in the KB Dam, and that water could have benefited sindh without the "temporary loss" of people which you are talking about.

and this is not temporary for them by no means, they have lost their savings of whole life, they lost their homes, they have nothing to eat, they lost their crops, and you are calling it "temporary"

Re: In order to avert this many lives lost - Pakistan should start The Kalabagh Bunn!

Where did I say that KB should not be constructed? Please carefully read all above. I have just said that the current loss of lives would have not been averted as claimed by many people. And it is a fact the people living in embankment of Sindh River in Sindh always welcome flood.

And please do not tanut here and do not get personal. Thanks.

Re: In order to avert this many lives lost - Pakistan should start The Kalabagh Bunn!

Beside falling behind party lines (or ethnic lines), what are the genuine arguments against KB. For me its simple every year we get floods and then drought and both of these can be controlled by constructing dams. As for -ives that will happened due to construction of dam are

1) displacement of people - which is happening anyway due to floods and happens every year.

2) Other provinces might have doubt that Punjab will steal their water - but cant we build it so we give Dam control (to operate) to Sindh or Pakhtoonkhowh? will this not address their concerns?

3) I have read somewhere that Sindh has a concern that Sea water will come into indus River due to dam - but cant this be addressed by applying point 2 defined above?

As a layman, only logic I understand is that we are wasting so much water every year (and get people killed). Why not store that water for bad times? Please help me understand.

Re: In order to avert this many lives lost - Pakistan should start The Kalabagh Bunn!

Kalabagh Dam has capacity to store six million acre feet (MAF) of water. In this flood the water flow was estimated to be 100 MAF. I dont think the dam would have made a damn difference.
