Re: Imran arrested after stand-off with Jamaat-e-Islami students
Quite a strange episode...
After release, will he sit with Qazi as cosy as he did till 3 weeks ago?
Maybe he will. Becuase he still did sit with Qazi, Benazir and Nawaz after all that they did to him in 1996.

LAHORE-Premier educational institutions in the City witnessed students rallies against the emergency and IJT’s manhandling and handing over of Imran Khan to the police.
The pick of these protests was seen in the Punjab University where thousands of students registered their protest against IJT for roughing up Imran Khan and later producing him before police.
A huge protest demo was staged by students at the Punjab University to condemn the arrest of cricket hero turned politician Imran Khan and the role of Islami Jamiat Tulaba in the whole situation.
** There had been no call from any group or organisation for the protest staged as a mark of solidarity with Imran Khan and to condemn the IJT.**
** The protests began at 9:30 am when about 100 students gathered at the PU’s Law College.
The students both male and female formed a procession and moved to other departments. The whole university came alive in protest as the number of protesters swelled to thousands. They shouted slogans against IJT. **
The angry students ransacked the IJT office in the Chemical Technology Department, IER and Geology Department (IJT’s main office).
They broke the window panes and challenged the IJT leaders to come out in open.
** Reportedly many IJT workers and Nazims were upset with the thrashing of Imran Khan and his arrest and they also joined the protest.** There were reports that they would hold a Press conference at the Hailey College to announce their disassociation with IJT. The conference could not be held but some sources disclosed that it may be held on Friday(today).
The protesters went all around the varsity. They shouted slogans for restoration of democracy and lifting of emergency in front of Vice Chancellor’s office.
Interestingly the students had no leaders making speeches and they were not carrying any banners.
Some students, however, were carrying placards with protest slogans inscribed on them.
No classes could be held in the varsity’s various departments. The faculty members did not join the students protest but they expressed solidarity with them.
** According to some faculty members the protest was unprecedented. ‘There has never been such a protest in the last 25 years. Even the IJT could never stage such a big protest. This is also for the first time that any protest has been staged by someone else other than IJT. Being against IJT the protest comes as a surprise’, a faculty member said.**
‘The protest was a mark of solidarity and reflected the diverse opinion we have in the varsity. It shows mood of the majority of students. As long as the protests are peaceful we have no problem with them’, PU’s Registrar Dr Naeem Khan said.
The Punjab University Teachers Front’s Executive Committee held a meeting on Thursday noon. The meeting condemned the IJT and the police men in civvies for torturing and beating Imran Khan.
‘He is our national hero and a great philanthropist. He built image of Pakistan around the globe and won accolades for the country. An honest and straight forward politician Imran Khan should be immediately released unconditionally’.

Re: Imran arrested after stand-off with Jamaat-e-Islami students
After this incident, all the bearded political parties of Pakistan stand exposed -- they are all, ALL, in cahoots with Musharraff, and indeed I strongly suspect now that it was he who got them to power in the frontier....
Re: Imran arrested after stand-off with Jamaat-e-Islami students
Sa1eem, it is really sad to see the comments on law and university rules coming from you. When it comes to breaking the law, Musharraf has put Iskandar Mirza, Ayub, Yahya, Butto and Zia on shame. The guy has declared emergency (Martial Law) twice, once against his own goverment. He has suspended constitution twice and brought CJ in Army house where he and other three generals threatened him for 5 hours. For God Sake, take a red pill and do a reality check. The law is roasted in Mush's rule and you are talking about Punjab University and IJT. Everyone know what goes in PU and what IJT has done in this great institute in last 25 years.
Moreover, the goons Mush accompanying are the most innocent souls in Gujraat and Karachi. They respect the law the most in this country. kiya baat hai!
jub chahte hain qanoon bana lete hain, jub chahte hain phaar ke phenk dete hain. doosron ko protest bhi nahi karne dete. DHEET kahein kay!
THE manner in which one of General Musharraf’s most vocal critics, Imran Khan, was arrested on Wednesday is highly questionable. Mr Khan, who escaped his home after being detained right after the emergency was imposed, came to Punjab University on Wednesday to mobilise students against the emergency. However, students of the Islami Jamiat-i-Tulaba, the student wing of the Jamaat-i-Islami, are said to have roughed up Mr Khan on his arrival, detained him in a classroom for 45 minutes before bundling him in a van which was handed over to the police. Mr Khan has been charged with several counts of disrupting public order, but more worryingly, he has also been booked under the anti-terrorism act. As head of his own political party, Mr Khan has the right to protest as well as mobilise people. He did not call for people to take the law into their own hands nor did he incite them to adopt violent means. Mr Khan joins a reported list of 5,000 people who have been detained since the emergency was imposed, of which very few can be described as terrorists. This double standard is not winning the government any votes. The government must pay heed to the growing resentment within the country, as well as international calls, to rescind the emergency and restore all fundamental rights.
It is also important to take note of the IJT’s behaviour. The group has more or less terrorised the Punjab University for the last year or so, bullying the administration into taking certain decisions like shutting down the musicology department or disrupting cultural functions. The self-professed morality police seem to be upset that Mr Khan was invited to the PU campus without their knowledge, as if the university is their sole turf. This self-righteous attitude coupled with coercive force — similar to another fiery ethnic student group’s in Karachi — has never been taken to task by university administrations or the political leadership of the parties the student groups belong to. This time a JI leader has condemned the behaviour of IJT but it must be followed through by stern action against them. No student group should have a monopoly on campuses
