Can a culture thrive without a show business industry? I’m referring to actors, actresses, dancers, singers, etc.
Would you push your child into show business?
Is it wrong to be Muslim and wanting a career to be an actor/ actress, dancer, singer?

Re: Importance of Show Business
I don't know about culture thriving....... depends on what do u define culture as..
but big no no for me.........as my dada g would say..its k... khwaana...
Re: Importance of Show Business
Again it's a very weird area of a profession. Performing arts Islamically isn't encouraged and earning by means which are not allowed in Islam means that the earnings are illegal too. However, it all depends on the kind of work one takes up.
It's also associated with horrendous scandals, weird frauds and generally still not acceptable culturally. But alot of people are striving to do good in the industry too. But that's like a very very tiny number

^seedha seedha jawaab do..........
Re: Importance of Show Business
Outlaw it all you want, there's always gonna be a market for it. Not that I agree with it, but there's always gonna be a way for it to happen somewhere in some way.
Re: Importance of Show Business
^ what if ur little topi-kids want to be showbiss??
Re: Importance of Show Business
^seedha seedha jawaab do..........
seedha jawab nai hai na. Alot of ppl are encouraging their kids to get into media studies. My own cousin who's MA ranked as number 1 in World debating himself has opted for corporate law and media studies. Now this is coming from parents who are both doctors. So if somebody comes up and is a good news anchor or is running good current affairs program it wouldnt be culturally wrong. Am talking about boys not girls.
At the same time, I doubt his parents or anybody elses parents would have wanted their kids to just take music as a profession or film making.
Re: Importance of Show Business
news anchor etc are ''journalists'' not showbizz personalities.......
Re: Importance of Show Business
its k. kkhaana as NomiCA's dada says
Re: Importance of Show Business

I'll give them a thappar and hope that it slaps the showbidness out of them.
Re: Importance of Show Business
Society can thrive with Show Business. Culture: as Nomica said, I dont know what do you mean by culture.
I would love my kids to go into creative art, but not necessarily in performing art
Re: Importance of Show Business
Are we in the 21st century or is this some sort of a back to the past thread?
Re: Importance of Show Business
i personally do not consider acting, dancing and singing a real profession
and as a muslim i would discourage my children in becoming any of the three
Re: Importance of Show Business
i can understand that muslims think performing arts - dance, music, acting - are not good, and consider it a big no-no for their kids and family in general to get into.
what i can't understand is why there is no taboo on watching any of these. if you can indulge in these "vices" on a daily basis and still be considered a decent person, at least have the courtesy to appreciate these professions as legitimate, and give the artists their due respect.
Re: Importance of Show Business
There is a huge difference between the arts or culture and show business. They are not the same. Beethoven is culture. Ghalib is art. George Clooney is show business. I have no problem with my kids growing up to be in the finer arts. Music. art, photography are worthy endeavors. That doesn't work in show business.
Re: Importance of Show Business
"Music. art, photography are worthy endeavors. That doesn't work in show business."
because?
Re: Importance of Show Business
Because show business in my humble opinion is commercial. People don't produce big blockbuster movies for art. They produce it for money. Bol and Khuda kay liye are perfect example of artistic pieces. Most modern commercial India/US movies are not art.
Re: Importance of Show Business
commercial as opposed to most professions being charities? these justifications are so lame. have you watched ocean's eleven? did it make you feel ashamed of yourself, or guilty?
Re: Importance of Show Business
^ @ CM agreed - just as Bol and Khuda ke Liye, one can find other good movies also.
Lots of talented singers, dancers and even films may not fit the traditional art definition. But art evolves, likes evolve, and people like and gravitate towards other non-traditional forms of entertainment.

Nope most of those endeavors being for purposes other than Hollywood. After all why do people make the difference between the Sundance Film Festival and the Oscars? The justification maybe lame but it is the unit of measure generally accepted.
Ocean's Eleven was great. It was unrealistic, light-hearted with focus being on a group of people successfully robbing another group of people.
Southie I have heard of a few Indian movies on the same lines. There is this movie I saw in Farah where different directors have created short stories about the lives of different people in India. Very much like Paris Je t'ami or New York I love you. That would be considered artistic in my opinion.
