Importance of '5' in Punjab's culture

Re: Importance of ‘5’ in Punjab’s culture

so how they refer Brahputra Nadi in sentence… Gnaga Nadi pahaRon se aati hai.. Brahputra Nadi pahaRon se aata hai. So much confusion for children at school.

Sacrificed means?

I thought there was some bowl, in which they put their blood (probably by cutting their hands).

Replace word hands with head.

The version of story that I know is that Guru asked for five volunteers for the ultimate sacrifice, that is to give their life in the hands of guru to symbolize the fearless loyalty that a khalsa should carry in his heart. Punj Pyare were those loyalists

We take nadi as a stream and darya as river.

^ that is what the song implies.

Re: Importance of ‘5’ in Punjab’s culture

You make Guru Gobind Singh ji seem like the Bal Thackeray of his time. There are stories of him giving water to injured muslim soldiers after the fighting finished. The sikh fight was more a fight for survival against rulers who happened to be muslim rather than against muslims or islam.

Re: Importance of ‘5’ in Punjab’s culture

I would like to make a little correction here. A little geographical lesson here as well.

Historically, before partition the 5 rivers of Punjab were Beas, Sutlej, Ravi, Jhelum and Chenab. This is how the word Punjab was formulated. However after partition, most of these rivers flow through West Pakistan (Pakistani Punjab).

If you look at the map, River Beas flows entirely in Indian Punjab before merging with Sutlej. As far as West Punjab is concerned, River Beas is not included as one of the 5 rivers. However, River Indus does flow through the entirety of the West Punjab, it enters Punjab near Attock and flows south until it is merged by confluence of (Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi and Sutlej) in the Bahawalpur district. From there on wards this massive confluence flows south to Arabian Ocean as one river.

Technically speaking, as for as the West Pakistan is concerned we can include River Indus as one of the 5. Thus the 5 rivers of West Pakistan are Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej.

Re: Importance of ‘5’ in Punjab’s culture

But word Punjab was not coined after partition. right? This reminds me line ‘we can change our geography, but not history’.

Re: Importance of ‘5’ in Punjab’s culture

There is no connection. Other than the 5 K’s of Sikhs. There are many muslims and hindus with no ‘5’ connection to the Punjab.
