Maybe I’m understanding incorrectly, but in Hindu mythology, rivers are considered to have gender? Excuse my ignorance (and the dumb question I’m going to ask), but based on what are rivers considered male/female in the mythology?

Rivers were considered to be the source of life, hence female, Brahmaputra is called son of brahma, once in assam I saw it flowing at great pace, my brother remarked it flows that fast because it is male
