Maybe I’m understanding incorrectly, but in Hindu mythology, rivers are considered to have gender? Excuse my ignorance (and the dumb question I’m going to ask), but based on what are rivers considered male/female in the mythology?

all rivers are females…famous song about Ganga [Ganges] river:

Ganga merii maaN kaa naam, baap kaa naam Himaala
[Ganges is my mother, Himalya is my father]

there was a controversy when this song was released. Hindus demonstrated against the song charging the lyric writer of ‘incest’ because Ganges originate from Gangotri in the Himalya range and this it’s Himalya’s daughter, not wife.

the Kaur is right, the river Brahmputra [son of Brahma] is the ONLY river that is considered a male.
