IMP: What to do when the past comes to haunt you..

You gave up your past, you asked Allah for forgiveness and generally moved on and tried to live a better life.

Then suddenly one day it all came crashing back and people started discovering your past and speaking ill of you.

What do you do ? What is the islamic way to handle this ? Any supplications to stop the spread of rumors ?

This is a serious question, only serious answers please…

jeez. good question. i wish i knew.

ignore karo. if you're affected by it you assume that anything they suppose about you can actually reflect on who you are, and clearly that is untrue. if their words become irrelevant garbage to you then you wont really mind what they say so much :).

unless its people you care about..

Easier said than done. Specially when everyone around you starts speaking **** of you and thinking bad of you, including your own family.

I hope and pray things will improve for your family. Do a lot of Sadqa and Khairat. Continue asking Allah for forgiveness. Think about the hardships faced by Allah's messenger Eesa (and other messengers). You'll realize that our problems may not be that overwhelming.

May Allah help everyone. Ameen.

brother maniac i know it is hard to practice than to say but it might be just a test from allah swt,
and besides, allah’s rasul :saw: has said that no misfortune or pain hits a believer but its removes some of his sins..so inshalalh it will be good for you in the akhirah…may allah bless you with strentgh to go through this…ameen

Re: Re: IMP: What to do when the past comes to haunt you..

Great advice (for once) :k:

Sometimes we have to suffer the consequence of our sins in this life. Take it as a test from Allah :swt: in this life. At the end of the day you cant change peoples actions, so just concentrate on yourself and try to remain on the right path.

Read the Taif Dua, the Prophet saw made this dua when he was
sad and hurt by the ignorant people of Taif at that time.
One of Allah's Name is 'Al-Ghafur' which means
'The forgiver, The hider of faults', just read it..
and say 'there is no Might and Power, save Allah' -'lahola wala quqata ilabila hual aliul azim'..

The Taif Dua
"Oh, my Allah! To Thee I complain of the feebleness of my strength, of my lack of resources and
of my being unimportant in the eyes of people.
Oh, Most Merciful of all those capable of showing mercy!
Thou art the Lord of the weak, and
Thou art my own Lord.
To whom art Thou to entrust me;
to an unsympathetic folk who would sullenly frown at me,
or to an alien to whom Thou hast given control over my affairs?
Not in the least do I care for anything except that I may have Thy protection for myself.
I seek shelter in Your light – The light that illuminates the Heavens and dispels all sorts of darkness, and which controls all affairs in this work as well as in the Hereafter.
May it never be that I should incur Thy wrath,
or that Thou should be displeased with me.
I must remove the cause of Thy displeasure until Thou art pleased. There is no strength nor power but through Thee."

Brother Maniac :salam: – Let the wagging tongues wag. You cannot stop them, insha’Allah over the time Allah (swt) will.

In meantime you can take a great comfort in the following ayah:

*“Except those who repent, and cherish faith and do good works, **such are the ones whose bad deeds will be turned into good deeds ** by Allah. Allah is indeed Forgiving and Merciful.” * (Al-Furqan: 70)

Subhan Allah! If your repentance is sincere and you keep on doing the good deeds, your previous bad deeds will rewarded to you as good deeds!

This is the promise of the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving.

Maniac , you and your family know that whatever happened was your past .Theres a Quranic ayah or Hadeeth (sorry Im not sure) which says something like " If Allah wishes to hide your sins , keep them hidden." Not sure exactly how/what it was.But if you really regret what you did in the past and have learned from your mistakes, theres no need to bring it out in the open.If it does come out...maybe try to explain to those who are close to you..and dont care about what the rest think/say.

ps-- not sure you used the you as an example or it really is you.So dont mind how I worded my reply.

There are two issues here. The first is what you are asking i.e. any duas to stop rumors. The other is the social and interpersonal impact of such rumors on your life. The dua part is where our members have already provided you some advice. If you also seek advice on the other part of this issue, then ask. I am not sure you want that, so am holding off.

Shouldve worded it better, but yeah im asking for advice on this matter. Any and all advice helps.

Re: Re: IMP: What to do when the past comes to haunt you..

Anti good advice, maybe we should concentrate on hardships faced by our beloved prophet:saw: rather than Easa. Why you ask, because, most of the hardships that you know of faced by Esa are known to you through Bible and we all know how reliable that is.

It depends.. on what kind of rumors these are and what kind of personality you have. Although, now we are more on a social discussion and not a religious one, so feel free to skip, if you don't want to.

The way I look at it, typically rumors have some basis of truth and some embellishments. So, if its something thats true, and you have moved on from that phase, you (or whoever you are talking about) just need to be honest about it, if someone asks. Depending upon who asks and why, you can either ignore it, or respond honestly and clearly. There is little to be gained by lying about it and denying something thats true (even partially). Everyone makes their own mistakes, and some mistakes linger longer than the others. Its better to face them and deal with them instead of being annoyed at others for bringing it up, when you thought you had moved past them. Hope it helps.

Whats the arabic for that?

Abdullah…

Hazrat Ali :razi: said: If you decide to change, then do not be concerned with what you used to be…

Let bygones be bygones, however you used to be…

What if the attacks are on a woman's character and reputation? I understand it's different for men. Society holds women to a much higher standard and the repurcussions can be more serious.

i wonder that myself soemtimes… :bummer:
