How do you know that marriage didn’t have internal problems? Maybe she was planning on marrying him for real reasons, but the marriage didn’t work out, and she just waited for the green card before leaving him?

He sounds like a very cooperative man. The ‘internal problem’ that comes to my mind is her not finding him interesting enough or something.
