What ever makes you happy. The trouble is in the West, everyone knows it as Ramadhan.

Urdu is an Indo-Aryan language like Hindi or Marathi, while Arabic and Hebrew are Semitic, and such Urdu does not have dh sound., which is only found among Semitic languages. But you could make the same argument with English words. Most Pak asay Gormant instead of Government, our Punjabi and Mirpuri brothers say mayarment instead of measurment.

It is called Ramzan in urdu because the alphabet "zuad" did not come from Arabic root into urdu. It came from Persian root. So, it does not matter whether you call it Ramzan or Ramadan except when you are reading this word in Quran (of course when you are reading Quran in arabic). If you pronounce it Ramzan there, it will be a wrong pronounciation and a mistake.

I dont get the deal with this thread. I have egyptian friends and they also pronounce the arabic alphabet differently. they sure call ramadan, ramadan but they also pronounce ث as saa rather the standard arabic of tha a bit like urdu. also they pronounce ج as g, so instead of hijab, masjid, ajmal they say hegab, masgid, agmal etc.

but when it comes to reading the quran they have to revert to standard arabic with their pronounciation, alot of things i notice with the mosque teachers in my communities is that they pronounce the quran completly wrong and read it the urdu way lol.

I pronounce ramadan as i live in the west and when i have to explain to non muslims abotu fasting using that word is alot easier as they are familiar, ramzan will just confuse them more.

i dont know what is it with these ppl on this forum. Every Ramadan someone comes up with thread with same issue and funny thing is they dont really care about ramadan or islam either but they want us to pronounce ramadan wrong cuz we pronounce it like them evil arabs.

When I speak Urdu I say Ramzan ... when I speak English or Arabic I say Ramadan ... the only time when it would be wrong to convert the word back to its original is when it changes the meaning ...

For example ... in English we say "grapes" which is from the french word "bunch" - the correct word would have been "raisin" but we give that word the meaning of dried grapes ...

To suddenly change the word grape to raisin in English will be confusing and hence wrong ... however since in Pakistan people speak both Urdu and Arabic and English it is easy to recognise the word Ramadan and Ramzan and use them in interchange.

Other examples are place names: Bombay and Mumbai - both are acceptable ... in Urdu these days the people are saying "so" instead of "phir" ... if Urdu is so valuable then why lose those terms? In the past we used to call any "machine" an "ala" ... why have we stopped doing that? Languages change and sure enough they can even change back to what they used to be ... let's get over it.
