"I'm an American and I'm a Muslim"

Thanks for the flower…Here’s one from me…:flower2:

It’s a computer image and you probably can’t smell it, but it smells like Raat ki Raani…:flower2:

Nobody has the right to redefine Islamic principles to ‘fit into’ American society.

My above statement was made in response to the Quoted below (By PyariCgudia)

Now everyone has their own idea of what it means to retain one's religion when living in an ethnically-diverse country. Maybe some of you might think I'm "integrating" and therefore giving up my religion by wearing jeans and t-shirts to school. Maybe your idea of giving up one's religion is me talking to my non-muslim neighbor cordially and inviting them over to dinner. Who decides when integration becomes "sacrificing ones religion"? Are you that authority? I dont recall the Quran telling me not to be friendly with my non-muslim neighbors and to wear only an abaya!

Apart from other questionable notions in the above statement the following stands out like a sore thumb: “Now everyone has their own idea of what it means to retain one's religion when living in an ethnically-diverse country”.

We don’t follow Islam according to ‘our ideas’ but to what Islam demands of us, period. Yes, in practice we can be lax as individuals but cannot and should not perceive Islam according to our own preferred wishes and notions.

and anyone who has read any of my posts in the World Affairs Forum should know by now i am the last individual on earth to propose such a preposterous notion.

I made a special effort to read your other posts (especially in World affairs) – and agree with you that you wouldn’t make such comments which (redefine Islamic principles to ‘fit into’ American society)…….

About your other posts?? …….. I agree with you on most of points raised by you.

On this thread …… I suggest you try to think purely from Islamic perspective and try to back it up from Quran or Hadith.

Lajawab, Thank you.

Ibn Sadique, i believe this topic has been discussed beyond recognition. Allah, alone, will judge me and my beliefs. If you consider some or all of my beliefs to be inaccurate, then i suggest we both learn to deal with not being able to reach a common ground between us. As with every issue, Allah knows best what is right and what is wrong. Consequently, in Him i place my trust; i feel no need to prove my beliefs to anyone else including those who would like to challenge my faith.

Allah Hafiz,

We don’t follow Islam according to ‘our ideas’ but to what Islam demands of us, period. Yes, in practice we can be lax as individuals but cannot and should not perceive Islam according to our own preferred wishes and notions.

You're speaking in the ideal. We "cannot and should not perceive Islam according to our own preferred wishes and notions". That is the ideal. In that sense, I say, yeah you are right, because that IS the way it should be.

However, living in the USA, things are never in the "ideal". Much of what should not be actually IS, and much of what cannot be also IS. I'm not talking about obvious rules of Islam, such as "adultery is wrong" or "murder is wrong". I'm talking about the minor issues (sometimes made into major issues), such as if I go to my neighbor and invite them over to dinner even if they're not muslim.

Now, I say something like that is perfectly Islamic. But, I've pitched the idea to others and I've found many that think its unIslamic. Fact is, that there is no rule that DIRECTLY says "never invite over your nonmuslim neighbor (note, I did not say Kaafir) for dinner". If there is, please show it to me. So, who is to be listened to, if there was a choice that had to be made between the two? What should and must be done? Should I or should I not invite my nonmuslim neighbor over for dinner?

If your answer is, yeah invite them over - there's nothing wrong with it, then I dont see why you would find the pictures in this thread offensive. Because its the same spirit in both the pictures and my example.

If your answer is no, then I do see why you find the pictures in this thread offensive.

Now, does that clarify my viewpoint, or are u still in disagreement with me? If you are still unsatisfied Ibn Sadique, well - oh well. I've paid a great deal time to you and I have better things to do than argue. Yeah, I have to back into the real world and be the opinionated, dominating, and bold woman that I am. And yes, you're probably thinking "vat a bad woman. She must be lewd. Hellbound she is, yes, that she is"

Godspeed,
PCG

As a side note, Nadia H, I totally agree with you. If we're really arguing about why its not "I am a Muslim and I am and American" vs. vice versa, then really we are losing sight of the main picture here.

I would like to know what those people who are blasting these pics with their criticism are DOING in society for Islam and for muslims? Are u guys really ACTIVE in practicing what you preach or are you full of hot air and talk?

For example, it was bothering me for a while that I wasn't really giving back to my community. Therefore, I decided to open up a committe in our university Islamic organization which will encourage students to expand their horizons beyond medicine (most of 'em are premeds) and to look into double majors, honors programs, senior thesis, graduate school, etc. Its kind of like peer advising, but muslims helping other muslims, cuz seriously, the concept of peer advising is pretty dead on our campus from all organizations and institutions.

Now you tell me. What have you done?

its surprising that this came from ur side. from first to last word, you haven't said a single thing that will make sense :~)

Islam by its nature is a mercy to all human beings (Muslim and non Muslim). So Muslims should have mercy for others, and care for their well-being and guidance.

Yes, we have to show our best manners to our neighbours, be they Muslims or non-Muslims. Even inviting them for dinner is good – but the intention is to give them the Dawah of Islam, and leaving an impression on them that Muslims have better ‘life-style’ than them and are not the demons portrayed by the biased press. I too am living in the West, American poodle’s land to be precise, but will always aspire to live by Islamic Values and will never adopt the British way of life as my way of life.

We, here in the West have to inter-act and not integrate.

May Allah (swt) reward you amply for your sincere efforts.

As a fellow Muslim I too would like to enter Jannah with good deeds, so whatever I do, I’ll leave it between myself and my Lord. (Note that in nearly 9 months I have only 34 posts to show for on Gupistan, so I must be spending my time doing some good deeds too).

Coming back to the topic at hand – the pictures – to me they still smack of APPEASEMENT and will achieve nothing what they are intended for - except that we all have wasted our time arguing about them.

You to your views and me to my views

Whatever gave you the impression that I was forming that opinion about you that "vat a bad woman. She must be lewd. Hellbound she is, yes, that she is"

You are my sister in Islam and I respect and honour you and will never have a judgemental view about you.

Below is the motto I live by:

“The true Moslem always thinks that he is the worst of Muslim people because he knows for sure his own sins and he does not know the sins of the others”.

BTW I have nothing against Muslims of America, I have named my eight year old son after Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X is one of my heroes, not because they are Americans but Muslims.

and who will pay for these extended horizons? you? your so-called committe? if they are premed students then thats wht they can afford and who knows how they are supporting themselves.

if you want to do something then do something that doesn't involve money ok. not everyone is rich like you.

have you done anything else other than setting up a cimmitte which i'm sure won't do no cursing, even if substitution with $ symbols - PCG except sit on its butt and burp all day. :~)

  1. I'm not rich

  2. this committee does not require any money to operate. Its an advisory group made up of students who are willing to spare some time to answer questions and motivate students to look all kinds of worthwhile careers. I would describe it as a peer mentoring kind of thing, except we want to get students, esp. freshman, to come out with their ideas and start working on them ASAP - and we provide whatever help they need. Usually freshman are timid and they end up waiting a year or two before they gather the guts to get involved.

  3. What is with the negative attitude?

  4. We certainly wont be sitting around.

It's kind of funny. The amount of time everyone's waisted on this post, they could have represented Islam by doing some community work instead.

Sad.

And you read the whole lot and wasted your time too, and now mine as well.

just came across this article

There are many other similar ones on their, go any of the sections on the menu. Theyre very conclusive and paint a very clear picture (or at least i think so)

Afghani, Rido and Abdou - Islamic Revivalists and New Age Thinkers

Very interesting and good site eemo…Thanks for sharing…:k:

The hypocrisy of those living in non-Muslim countries yet hating the country and its people is just fascinating to watch.

And the lack of thought amongst some us, is not even more fascinating to the extent that its ironic.

There isnt a single country on earth, that has allah's rule implemented holisticly. No state today has been born emanating from what has been given to us as our Aqeedah.

Doesnt matter where you go in the world, the regimes are either kufr, influenced by kufr, or allying with kufr.

Islam was revealed to be dominant over mankind. There are many ayah's that spreading islam to the rest of the world, is obligation, so at one stage or another , these countries would have to subjugate to the commands and prohibitions of Allah(swt) anyway.

Some of us, weren't born in these countries by choice, and further more all the land belongs to Allah(swt). A rather different matter that the laws being implemented in them negate the order of what Allah(swt) has bestowed upon us.

These laws and policies arent going to change, if we sit her like dumplings and dont voice our opinions against them.

Rasool(saw) first the first to attack the ways of the Kuffar...he insulted and ridiculed the Quraysh publicly. This is the greatest man sent to mankind as a mercy.

He received revelation in the Land which was dominated by kufr, just like today. His message was given to him to change the society that surrounded him. Are you saying, he was a hypocrite as well? Our beloved prophet(saw)? I suggest you think very carefully.

I personally would like to emulate the prophet(saw) so if i see anything as a threat to islam, then naturally am going to oppose it.

How i go about doing that, what means and styles i use, what method is best, and what is the best solution etc, is all beyond the scope of this particular post, but the point still remains, thats its obligation upon us.
