Re: Iftari Ideas & Recipes

I would say instead of stuffing with junk food try to eat heathy food like salad, soup, and a balanced dinner and fruit.

Re: Iftari Ideas & Recipes

Soup for iftari is a really excellent idea. Arab people cook this porridgy stew thing made from pearl barley and meat, cooked slowly for ages. I prefer to make a soup of the same ingredients and add some green cabbage leaves, carrots and sweetcorn in at the end. Its really good for u.

Another idea is fajita wraps, they r just enough to fill u up, not too heavy.

Re: Iftari Ideas & Recipes

^lusi i just said that as its in pakistan....

i m in uSa i don't have time for iftari as i am full time work/mom/housework. SO i tell my hubby we will have roohafza/khajoor then after namaz dinner.

Re: Iftari Ideas & Recipes

It was just a general comment. Yeah in Pakistan mostly people have heavy iftari with lot of fried food so I guess it would be nice if people cut down on the fried food and add more healthy food.

Rest, I am also in US and we only make a desi style iftari on weekends.

Re: Iftari Ideas & Recipes

^okey :)

I do make that kind of soup with chicken, mix vegetables, celery, extra carrots, extra string beans, and cabbage. Sometimes, I add barley, or little pasta aswell. It is yumious!

Yeah wraps are always healthy and delish.

Oh yeah the arabs make it with tomato puree and meat and quaker oats =) it's called shourba and it's an absolute MUST! They also make a haleem-like dish called Harees or Hareesa.. (not a fan!)

Re: Iftari Ideas & Recipes

Oooh i love hareesa. Unfortunately ammi doesnt remember the ratios anymore. Its supposed to be really good for you too.

Re: Iftari Ideas & Recipes

kaaley cholay
keema/aloo rolls

chicken or beef pieces on skewers (like boti kababs)
rooh afza doodh with pistas and badams
papri chaat, bel puri
samosay
spring/egg rolls

Re: Iftari Ideas & Recipes

Can you guys post some recipes too? I am a newbie cook trying to make stuff in my susraal this year.. my mil has invited people over for first roza to meet her bahu :D

Re: Iftari Ideas & Recipes

Ok dahi baray... very easy

Soak mash daal for an hour. Blend it into a thick paste with little garlic, salt, and little red chilli for kick. Fry the barhas you fry pakoras on mediumish heat till golden brown. Soak them in room temperature water for 5-10 mins or so. Squeeze the water out of them. Lay them in a dish. Sprinkle some chaat masala. Pour salted yogurt over them and garnish.

For chicken kabobs... marinate chicken with salt, pepper, lemon juice and chaat masala( optional ). Cook them on the stove till tender and then leave them in the oven to for few mins like 5ish so they little brown from top but don't over cook them. Serve them with baked vegetables.

Re: Iftari Ideas & Recipes

shay, there have been soem threads on iftar ideas and in the past. And i remember some of them had awesome recipes. I will see if i can come back and repost some of those threads.

Re: Iftari Ideas & Recipes

mmmmmmmmmmmm....fooooooooooood.....:D

Yes, hareesa is what i was talking about, the husband loves it. Ira, yes again, i've also heard its supposed to b really good for u. Actually i remember reading somewhere that the Prophet Mohammad pbuh used to eat it too.

I don't know the recipe for it either, i've searched the net but no joy, so we just improvise, it tastes quite nice sometimes, but i don't like the texture.

I'm gonna check for shourba recipe now.

Re: Iftari Ideas & Recipes

Rupay if you find a good recipe for shourba, please share with us.
