Re: Ifs and Buts in Sunnah

I am saying our intention for Sunnah should be to perform an action because Muhammad (SAW) did it, provided he (SAW) did it to serve a purpose for benefit in the Hereafter or for a benefit in the world that would lead to a benefit in the Hereafter. In which case it should also benefit us in the Hereafter.
Understood and also that it had not been done before for the same reason before. For instance, if I say siwak, is it a practice that Muhammad SAW introduced i.e. cleaning ones teeth. I do not think so but rather he emphasized it as a good habit. If I clean my teeth with tooth paste today with the same intention for cleaning my teeth because Allah SWT likes for muslims to be hygenic would you regard it as Sunnah or does it have to be with a siwak stick that would make it a Sunnah or both.
