Re: If you're Pakistani and you're mistaken for an Indian...
or dis punjabi folks!
Ironically, the people that are always hating on Punjabi folks are rather keen to play the victim card when someone responds negatively to their blatantly dissing comments. It rather seems that the people who most like to sling mud at others cannot tolerate mud being slung back them.
Re: If you're Pakistani and you're mistaken for an Indian...
pakistanis in general would feel offended as we consider ourselves to be much better looking than indians and which i personally believe is a fact...thats basically it.
You do realize several million of your fellow Pakistanis are actually of Indian ethnic origin and identify with those Indian ethnicities: Hyderabadi, Gujarati, Bihari, UP etc.?
Even if they weren't, racism is unacceptable. Nationality doesn't determine how good looking a person is. To consider people of one country to be inherently better looking than people of another is ridiculous.
Re: If you're Pakistani and you're mistaken for an Indian...
*you are expecting the person mistaking you for an indian to know all this AND know how sensitive you are about it? A majority of the times they are just being nice when they bring up your nationality, not trying to insult you. *
So true. Many non-desis here don't know about the wars between India and Pakistan. Here, in the Netherlands. As a child it was my turn to speak in front of the class once. My topic was Pakistan and even our teachter didn't know that once Pakistan and India were one country, he didn't know about partition and subsequent wars, everyone was surprised. Even now most people I know, have no idea about these issues. They know almost nothing about us. Months ago someone at work wanted to know more about my background and was surprised when I told her these things. Since 9-11 many non-Desi people do have weird unjust ideas about Pakistan though.
Re: If you're Pakistani and you're mistaken for an Indian...
How sad that some people know how to put matters into perspective when it concerns non-pakistanis and will explain away certain behaviors, but in the same breath will generalize about Pakistanis.
Re: If you're Pakistani and you're mistaken for an Indian...
I think it goes both ways. I have heard of plenty of Indians in the West say they're annoyed when racists call them a P*ki. And what irritates me is the fact that they should be offended at being called a racist word but their mere irritation only stretches as far as being mistaken for a Pakistani. Now I have had some great Indian friends, still do, so I am not saying this is true for all Indians, but it shows history between our nations plays a factor. Yes we were one country, but we aren't anymore and there is a reason for it. Now we have significantly different traditions and cultural practices that are developing by each passing year.
As for ethnic debate. I don't understand Punjabis being attacked everywhere online. The ills of our country aren't down to Punjabis, they are down to the ruling elite. As far as I know Zardari wasn't a Punjabi, neither was Musharraf. Our country is suffering as a whole, I doubt the ghareeb deehati in Punjab cares about who is Punjabi or Sindhi. We are all Pakistanis, end of. These ethnic divisions only weaken our country.
As for me personally, if I am ever mistook for some other nationality I correct the person and move on. If I get the 'but you were one country' then I also give a lighthearted reply by saying that the keyword was 'were'.
Re: If you're Pakistani and you're mistaken for an Indian...
Racisit karachians don't even know that half the punjab consists of immigrants from indian side. Yet they never tried to identify themselves separetely from the rest of the people as ' muhaajirs'. They assimilated. So those who keep shouting about how immigrants are mistreated in pakistan need to look into their own girebaaan.
