Pakistan and India were at one point in time - the same country and while the religious differences still exist - the people still resemble each other in many ways.
So why do people get so bent out of shape and sensitive if someone says “Indian” and not “Pakistani”?
Re: If you're Pakistani and you're mistaken for an Indian...
1.Pakistan and India were once **one colony **which was called 'British India', after that Pakistan came into existence on August 14 1947 and India the next day.
2.I would correct people if they mistook me as India or anyother nationality and we should; Canadian get pissed off when anybody calls them American and New Zealanders don't like being called Australian and they have more in common than we do;we're different countries, i should not be expected to accommodate anybody's ignorance.
3.Personally i've almost never been mistaken as Indian and when i do it's usually by other Indians who assume i'm 'lightskin Indian' from Kashmir(which i am).
Re: If you're Pakistani and you're mistaken for an Indian...
Sure, correcting them is fine if its that important.
**
But why are people offended by it?**
Because Indians are dark as coal and Pakistanis are white as milk :@:
Reha, do you remember that thread in All Views a while back about stereotyping/generalisations and one poster was more upset about being called 'dark' than having his character or values called into question..

not true...only true with South Indians...most North Indians are light skinned [more Indians live in North India as compared to South India]...people think i'm a Spanish or Iranian. lol
Re: If you're Pakistani and you're mistaken for an Indian...
^I was being sarcastic :D
I don't see a huge difference between Indians and Pakistanis in terms of appearance here in the UK (and most non-Pakistanis can't seem to differentiate between the two either)..
You get dark Indians and dark Pakistanis, you get pale Indians and pale Pakistanis.. Horror of horrors some Indians in the West can actually also be mistaken for Turks or Iranians as well lol

there you go! :D we are the same people! :)
Re: If you're Pakistani and you're mistaken for an Indian...
yes i do and i will never say dat we r same .......*we were different and we are different *
You don't have to. People mistake Pakistanis for Indians all the time...its common.
But the emotions behind it are very strange to me. The vehement dislike some people show is alien to me. The offense (as if their morality was questioned) is almost shocking.
Re: If you're Pakistani and you're mistaken for an Indian...
I usually smile real wide, tell them I'm from Pakistan and then compliment them for being so close.
Heck today I asked a lady if she was from India, turns out she wasn't. She was Sri Lankan. But she didn't get mad or hurl insults at me. I guessed Indian because of her Hindu sounding name, not her skin color.
Re: If you're Pakistani and you're mistaken for an Indian...
It depends on the importance of the conversation, and the amount of time I have. I don't always correct, I didn't 2 days ago when I asked for a veggie omelette n the guy making it assumed I was Indian. I was in a hurry and couldn't really be bothered. However 2 weeks ago, I did correct someone because the conversation was meaningful.
I don't get offended but i do correct them that i am Pakistani. For those who think we are same...we aren't. There is a reason..we are two different countries. So let it be.
Re: If you’re Pakistani and you’re mistaken for an Indian…
Other than Punjabi, Marwari, Gujarati, Sindhi, Parsi, no other ethnic groups are similar between Indians and Pakistanis. We need to also look at that. Why must it always be proven that Indians and Pakistanis are the same.
We can be friends and hopefully the two countries experience peace between each other. Some of us might look similar like the groups I mentioned above but no we aren’t the same.
Re: If you’re Pakistani and you’re mistaken for an Indian…
I would get offended and will correct them right there and then. We are NOT the same and world needs to know right there that we are different. Sharing borders and history with a country doesnt make us belong to it anymore, there is a reason that the ‘sub-continent’ is a history now.
AND that’s just MY opinion about ME so please dont jump on me if you differ in views
