hmm its upto u

Re: If you're Pakistani and you're mistaken for an Indian...

It wouldn't be a big deal for those people who have lost their Pakistani Passports and Pakistaniyat (probably a majority on this site)...but for us Pakistanis it is a big deal . You say India and Pakistan were one at once as if we had always been one...the fact is we were one at the point of a british gun for about 90 years (1840's to 1947 and a couple of times earlier but that too not the entire subcontinent)...that is about 1% of the 5000 year history of the Subcontinent. Yeah we were united for 1% of the history but jsut in order to prove your point you make it as if we have always been one...

Re: If you're Pakistani and you're mistaken for an Indian...

Nothing wrong with asserting identity and clarifying that you are different. I think Reha was talking more about the offence or hate part of it. Why to hate/or be offended if someone makes an innocent mistake about background? Most likely that non-Pakistani/Indian person does not know the nature or background of the issues. It's like how most people can make mistake of origin of a white person. Also what of the people who were living in their regions/areas whether on one side of border or another for 1000s of years (not saying it was all united as a whole) then they moved in last 60 years. Some may feel affinity to the place they left behind. Others may not obviously as Pakistan is quite diverse. Also patriotism cannot be just decided on colour of passport, can it? Many Pakistanis living abroad are very passionate about Pakistan and then there can be Pakistanis, maybe a smaller number, who despite living in Pakistan feel some affinity for those across the border. Aise ho sakta hai. I'm not making any definitive statements.
No offence intended with above comment. Same could be said vice versa.

Re: If you're Pakistani and you're mistaken for an Indian...

Islamabadi1, I understand what you are saying. Yet, liking India (and Bangladesh too for that matter) has nothing to do with loving Pakistan or not. I even know some Pakistani people living in Pakistan itself (even a few in Azad Kashmir) who love Pakistan and still don't hate India. You don't have to hate India (or Bangladesh) to love Pakistan.

Re: If you're Pakistani and you're mistaken for an Indian...

I'm Pakistani-American with family from India too.

When I was 9 or 10yo one of my good friends said something in conversation about how we were from India. I corrected her by saying, "Pakistan." Her response was, "Oh yeah, same thing," and I was hurt. Can't believe this thread reminded me of that moment so many years ago!

It's not being called "Indian" that's problematic or offensive. It's the dismissive/careless tone of the response. Of course she was young too and certainly didn't mean to be offensive or to trivialize my heritage. But the comment still stung a bit.
