I was asked this question, but in a slightly different form. The gist was the same.
If you werent muslim or if you came from a family who didnt care what you did, would you do things differently in your life? Would you try things that you are not trying because you are muslim? Would you take a laxer attitude on things like dating, drinking, partying, mingling, etc? Are there things you want to try/do/experience, and you arent because you feel its not islamic or not right?
Re: If you werent muslim, what would you want to try/experience?
Interesting..spin off from Barfee's post, huh? :D
I think I would have pretty much been the same, but I would have been a little more social at school - like i mean, i had friends..have friends, but i would have joined after school sport activities like b.ball or track. my parents had the notion, that oh no, you can't join cause it's gonna get late, and the coach is a guy, and a whole bunch of other stuff.
as for the drinking, partying aspecting - even if i could, i don't think i'd do it. maybe cause it's hard for me to imagine, but nah..don't think so.
the dating aspect however, is a different matter. as us girls and guys know, that when our parents are looking at rishtay for us it's really hard to get to know a person, and what their personalities are like. i think that's the biggest thing i would change. when we have an arranged marriage (parents finding your future spouse, you talking twice before getting married to him/her), it's really hard to see if you click with the other person. and it's an obstacle that we really can't go over.
anywho, i have rambled on long enough..
next person!
Re: If you werent muslim, what would you want to try/experience?
If I wasn't Muslim I most likely would not have had an arranged marriage. I am so grateful I don't have to go through the misery of bad dates, blind dates, players. I feel really bad for women who are in their mid-30's and still haven't found someone who would be a good husband and good dad. I can't imagine bringing some random guy home to my parents for dinner. American parents are so happy and proud when their kids start dating and having relationships. In our culture this is something to be so ashamed of.
Re: If you werent muslim, what would you want to try/experience?
Boyfriend , go to parties, travel, move out and live on my own..
The last two things, I know they’re not xclusive for non-Muslims, and it’s not against Islam at all, but for me and im sure alot of grls here its a taboo, a bad thing, for their nmarried daughter to travel alone/with friends and live on her own.. i dont fight too much with my parents anymore because it’s not worth the fight sometimes..

Re: If you werent muslim, what would you want to try/experience?
OH yeah dressin like a hoe
I remember when I was 12 or 13 I wrote that in my diary, taht the only thing keeping me from doing these things is my being Muslim, and nothing else.. I felt guilty because I thot that I should hate to want to do certain things, even w/o putting Islam in the picture.. Well when i got a lil older, I did do some of those things.. being “Muslim” doesn’t stop you.. if u’ve the desire to do it, ull do it and either come to ur senses and repent to Allah or abandon Islam..
Re: If you werent muslim, what would you want to try/experience?
I would wear those cute fashionable sophistacated skirts that come to your knee or just below the knee.
I would drink alcohol - but sparingly and only a little bit, mainly because the good stuff is expensive, and why waste time on cheap crap? Also, most alcoholic drinks are way too high on the sugar scales.
