Being told that if you were a beta, when you are infact a girl, that parents would have no worries.
A compliment or a depressing thought?

Re: If you were my son...
I don't get it. 'You' being the daughter?
Re: If you were my son...
neither a compliment, nor a depressing thing. it's just a THING that is.
Re: If you were my son...
lol, yes.
That post doesn't have much coherancy does it!
I will edit it!
Re: If you were my son...
I'm guessing for someone to make that comment, they probably don't have any son? And the comment sort of shows a tinge of regret at not having one.
Re: If you were my son...
I don't think it's regret. Seems to me like it's simply about parents worrying/caring about their daughter because they know that our society is the way it is.
Re: If you were my son...
those parents who say that are not in touch with reality. given the rsources what they have, these days girls, on the average, perform much better than boys in schools and in life and also its NOT nice to say that to a child. its insensitive, discriminatory and derogatory. :(
Re: If you were my son...
@jojo ^they are part of society. they choose to make it the way it is.
Re: If you were my son...
We're all girls and I have never heard my own parents say these things to us or anyone else.
Over the years, many ppl have made comments like "oh you dont have any boys, blah blah blah". In return, Ive always heard my parents (father) say that girls are better than boys when it comes to caring for their parents so they're not missing much. We're much more raunaqi, interactive, sensitive and in tune with their needs.
Re: If you were my son...
I have received such comments for my daughter .....people say that being a single parent its harder to raise a girl than a boy and things would have been better for me in future if I had a son.
It's just ignorance they have no clue how much blessing a daughter brings . A daughter can make life so so rich with joy and happiness. Like people say that agar beta neymat hai to beti rehmat hai it's a useless discussion.
Re: If you were my son...
Its true. They may not say it but it is true. Pakistani society is so messed up that they consider girls only mehman for a few years and then she has to go to her own home. But honestly it is true it may hurt but being a guy is much easier than being a girl. While on the parents want a girl to help them out in their old age.
Those of you born in the west need to realize that society has stereotyped defined roles for men and women and honestly these roles aren't retarded. There are there for a reason,
Re: If you were my son...
^ what reasons are those and elaborate on the stereotypes oh wise one
Re: If you were my son...
Hmm lets see.
Child-rearing is one. Its a gender role. One would obviously believe women are best are raising children due to their emotional connections with the child.

Re: If you were my son...
I can imagine people saying it to their daughters but i don't think its right to say that, pretty messed up actually. I've seen sons who leave their parents in their old age, and on the other hand i've seen daughters who stay with their parents till their death, and that too by going through so much trouble.
Re: If you were my son...
Let me put it little differently......
why are you having these thoughts?? are you doubting your parents 'intentions'?? Let me make it very ugly for you....so that you can realise what line your thinking on.......
"Your parents are jaahil and sexist.....they regret ever having you...and thinking back they would've buried u alive......"
Now......i am sure you don't think that......but the path you are treading..it will lead you to some conclusion like the statement i made above......
so.......stop being so sensitive to little things your parents say......it just could've been they miss having a son.....but u need not go this way...
Re: If you were my son…
How can that ever be a compliment?? It’s very sad that the mindset of many is such that they are elated when a son is born but pretend to be just as happy when a daughter is born. As someone said very nicely above, if sons are a naimat, then daughters are a rehmat ![]()
Talking about midset…this ad has been going on air for sometime:
Re: If you were my son...
Gosh, this has gotten very serious! It was a general comment as opposed to a personal issue. I have always been brought up with parents saying that betiya are Allah (swt)'s rehmat. It was something I heard, so thought I would like to hear other views on it. Also, thanks for the insights, but it was comments from parents with sons, so that was not the issue.

I am really sorry to say this, but your posts on the whole tend to really annoy me. They are rather persumptive & not often all that well considered.
Re: If you were my son...
I have only seen that in movies. Its pretty hard to believe that any parent would say that.

nevermind...i did get a little over the top with this one...i admit...but i was trying to suggest that people (not you personally) read too much into little things..and then in the threads with the replies and stuff things get blown out of epic proportions (which i am annoyed at).......and i just layed out the extreme situation to show the direction in which this thread was going....
I apologise if something i said was offensive to you...
