Allah is the source of Knowledge!
We don't pray to Allah and we expect him to help us. As if He is our servant and we are his bosses. Allah has left Jews and Christians inorder to kick us on track whenver we get off it (Israr Ahmed).
We are based on Usury and Interest - we are at WAR with Allah. Now beacuse we were guided and chosen, we deserve and will have the greatest wrath when we go astray.
Today we labeled as Muslims act worse than Jews and Christians. So what do you expect?

distrust of "white man's education system". classic case - indian subcontinent. to this day, a lot of economically poor muslims are lead on to believing that sending their kids to a "western sytle" school is bad. hindus and sikhs were "sell outs" who caught on a bit quicker.

that is true… but that doesnt mean muslims everywhere are backwards…look at dubai, malaysia, even in pakistan education is getting better and people are learning…many other examples but just saying that all the muslims are backward will be wrong

That has some truth to it, plus during the British rule we Muslims were crushed in everyway economically, politically and socially, whilst Hindus were preffered because they were and are good butt-lickers which has left us behind in a lot of fields (including arse licking) compared to Hindus.
It’s the case with a lot of Muslim countries, most of our countries have only recently been freed from European Colonialism where we’ve been suppressed in everyway, wars against us from outside and third persons causing civil wars amongst us, plus economic sanctions against us have also played their part.
Some countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates are not doing that bad and even a lot of other Muslim nations are economically better off than India.
Still nothing is more backward than bobbing your head up and down to lifeless idols, burning your women alive, drinking urine on a regular basis, dividing humanity based on what caste they’re born into, smearing your houses with cow poo, worshipping penis and vulva, sacrificing ‘low caste’ kids to your ‘goddess’, turning pre-pubescent girls into temple prostitutes to sexually serve the priests and pilgrims, preaching non-violence towards animals but not having any inhibitions slaughtering a six month old Muslim baby from Gujarat and many many many others.

Islam is intolerent to different cultures. Islam has the culture of the arabs. And they do not want to modify it to the place where they live. U r South-asian and still follow Arab culture. And this leads to conflict.

laja.. i dont know what did u mean.. but let me explain.. I have nothing against Islam. Only when u try to get Islam to be practiced like the arabs do then i have a problem. I have many muslim friends dear.. and i dont look at them as Muslims.. they are brothers to me.

I think because for some reason intolerance of other people and religions are fostered (just look at the replies before blasting me, you all just proved it) and an inability to adapt and change without 7 forms of permission from the nearest Iman.
Other than that Muslims have all the tools necessary, they just seem to be their own worst enemy.

Answer is pretty simple. Back in the good old days of Ottoman Empire, last real Mulsim power things were very different. After breakup of the Ottoman Empire and colonization of Muslim territories by Western powers, there has been a gradual descent in all spheres of life.
Since Muslim states have gained independence, they have stayed in the third world status for one reason or the other. Muslims wud like to blame the west for their ills, while westerners in search of easy solutions brand Islam as the source of problems. Both of them are wrong.
Islam is the reason or source of inspiration which imbued early muslims to strive for knowledge and search out the universe created by God. Driven by the early spirit of Islam’s egalitarian teachings and sense of social justice, Muslims were not only able to enhance their empires, they were also very successful in convincing others of Islamic virtues. Very early on (with some hesitation), Muslim elite recognized the importance of conversion and acceptance of different ethnic socieities into the Islamic fold. This quality of being able to accept and adapt was one of the major attributes which led to increased conversion, emphasis on literature and sciences, urge to find more about different ideas, willingness to listen and understand Greek philosophies, importance of poets, research and followup of Ahadeeth, and the great Sufis’ who spread the message of Islam.
