My husband was imprisoned for a long time.
My husband and I have been hounded on corruption charges (Interpol issued an arrest alert last year against us). Even though Musharaff has dropped charges against me now, there is no knowing what the future holds for me. And…last night I narrowly escaped being killed by a suicide bomber.
Now…why on earth…would I still want to risk my life and peace of mind to try and become a Prime Minister in a political setup that can be best described as a “lunatic asylum”, of a mostly “lawless” country.
I have 3 children.
I think I would just go back to Dubai/London and be there for my children, my husband and my family…and spend the rest of my life in relative peace and harmony.
Why would I put my hands in fire again, having burnt it several times before.
I cannot seem to fathom the motivation for doing so.
Conclusion : Either Benazir is genuinely patriotic OR she is an IDIOT.
Actually, my post above was motivated by the program I saw on CNN last night. Andersen Cooper was reeling out the names of all Pakistani politicians who have been killed/executed or died under unnatural circumstances....and in the end he said..." It will be safe to say...that political leaders in Pakistan do not have a good retirement plan".

What think I? There might be more mis-attacks (sort of mis-fire) and she will become PM, more attacks, she will be 'all out against terrorists', more attacks, army will take over, send her to jail/Dubai. oh did I forget to say she will be gaining $$$ in all that war against terror?

She is going to use these points to get votes and appeal the to sheeple of Pakistan. Esp the bold part. This seems to be the plan.

Pakistan isnt more 'lawless' than India, as far as the bigger picture is concerned, no matter how good our law and order situation is, suicide bombings wont stop because the bombers arent scared of the law, as they wont have to deal with the law once they're toast...

Okay...so in your book....for an Indian to say that anything in Pakistan is BAD amounts to saying that the equivalent in India is GREAT.
I don't know what to tell you....except that I wish you knew me personally. I seem to be equally hated by my fellow Indians and by Pakistanis...so I figure I must have a neutral opinion on Indo-Pak issues.
Anyways, back to the topic.....I find it difficult to believe that Benazir (at the ripe age of 54) would be willing to go to such lengths to try and make dollars for herself....as insinuated by some people above (notable Captain1 Saab). I mean at this age, people generally reach the "self-actualization" level devoid of materialistic ambitions.

Yes...I had expected a smart Pakistani to bring up that question. Its a valid question.
First up though, Mohandas Gandhi had nothing to do with the khandaan of Indira Gandhi. Just don't go by their last names.
And I should also mention - Sanjay Gandhi, Rajeev Gandhi's brother who was killed albeit in a helicopter crash.
Anyways, Sonia, as you know, is an Italian and she did refuse to become the Prime Minister when it was there for her taking (though perhaps for a different reason).
Indira was assasinated during the height of Sikh Militancy and Rajeev was done in by the Tamil terrorists. Even though I would say that India has a relatively much safer political environment (as compared to Pakistan), if I was Sonia - I would still have thought twice before allowing Priyanka and Rahul to get into politics...
I guess politics is intoxicating....and the power gives you a high like no other.

I respect both you and Some1, but I must say some1 is one of the very few Indians that I have meet who has very balanced view on India and Pakistan. Its really sad that there are not many people on both side of country like him. I have seen a lot of really educated moron's on both side who cannot keep their chest-thumping-patriotism aside and look at topic objectively if it is about India & Pak.

F&B, you know I wouldnt have said that had I not seen some1 doing this all the time. Just look at his posting history, he just spends time ont his site so that he can find things wrong with Pakistan, from mistakes with banners to outright hatred for Pakistanis just so that he gets 'little khushi'... It seems like some people just feel some sort of satisfaction by saying things like Pakistan is a majorly lawless country, whereas they totally ignore things that in alot of cases are much worse at their own end. To top it all, I have even seen Some1 once post that he despises everything about Pakistan and Pakistanis, and that does say something about him.

Either it would have been a “tongue in cheek” comment OR it may have been one of my posts from 1999-2000 when I first joined GS at the height of the Kargil War - had a lot of patriotic juice flowing back then. I remember posting here once that I returned a T-Shirt to the store when I found that it was “Made in Pakistan”. I just said this to get back at some Pak Guppie who was getting on my nerves. In the early days of the internet, Indians and Pakistanis (interacting for the first time) had a lot to say to one another, I guess.
Anyways, I don’t want to push my case too much. Will just say that some of my friends have started to call me a “Pakistani” given the amount of time I spend on Pakistani websites and the interest I show in Pakistani affairs.

She is not patriotic nor idiot. She has proved it over and over.
Its $1.7 Billion that is ceased by different governments and courts across the globe. The 5% she had with her for use must have been burnt out in last 8 years of lavish life style.

I would show the 'proof' that's been claimed of revealing the 'suspects' before the whole thing occured. Let the nation know who the black sheep are, as mentioned in the letter mailed to President before the journey, so i as 'BB' would have more backing because i've pointed out the 'devil in disguise'
BUT...then again wouldn't that be the blame game?!
um...now that i think about it! if you can have a bullet-proof/bomb-proof truck made, would it really not be practical to atleast deploy stadium lights so people could see 'people' and thus maybe, just maybe.....not have the dark become yet another excuse/factor to the whole situation. I say that because karachi govt. had suggested that they should wrap it all up by maghrib before dark sets (i agree, it makes sense) but since they knew it would prolong because of the traffic situation, 'I' would have invested in the stadium lights.......its sad to see police were using flash lights to scan the crowd...how pathetic!!!!
