Your arguments are both valid however weighed against the historic and geo political context we all know to well i see it as a more effective route to self sufficiency which is a long term bonus if you look at the Iranian model where despite sanctions they are growing it gives you an idea of what i’m envisaging.

Furthermore i also point to Nassers nationalisation of the Suez Canal as a prime example how a short term policy of nationalisation can be a great boost to ones nation for it made Egypt a major regional power after decades of ignomy.

I agree with the rest of your points, but please keep in mind that the Iranians are growing only because of the oil money. And they still have a lot of problems like inflation, rising deficits etc. Iran is not exactly a developed nation.

Regarding Egypt, had the US not interfered Nasser would have paid the price for his actions with his blood.
