‘Arms for peace and deterrence’: Musharraf inaugurates defence expo
**
KARACHI, Nov 20
: President Pervez Musharraf has said that Pakistan’s defence strategy is based on `defensive deterrence’, both in conventional and unconventional spheres.
**
** “We want to use our arms for peace only, for defensive deterrence,” President Musharraf said at the inauguration of fourth International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS) 2006 here on Monday.
**
He said Pakistan’s defence strategy emanated from its belief that peace could only be achieved through strength and not weakness.

The president said the greatest threat to any progress were the dangers from extremism and terrorism, not only for Pakistan but also for the entire world.

He said the only way forward was that of enlightened moderation, by rejecting extremism and terrorism while opting for socio-economic development for the sake of humanity.

“Pakistan is at the forefront in fighting extremism and terrorism and is fighting it militarily, politically, administratively and in the form of development activity,” Gen Musharraf said.

He expressed determination that the country would succeed in the fight and would sustain its economic upsurge.

He said that in the past, the country quantified its requirements and weaponry for the army, navy and the air force to deter any aggression in the conventional areas.

However, he said: “When the threat grew unconventional we had to rectify the imbalance and, therefore, we also went unconventional.”

** President Musharraf said: “Our strategy on defensive deterrence, both in conventional and unconventional fields, is in place, in strength, and is growing from strength to strength every year.”**

The president said Pakistan had learnt from its experiences to go for indigenous development of its defence products and to diversify markets for purchases.

He said Pakistan wanted to move ahead through joint ventures and to buy and sell products internationally, he said.—APP

Re: IDEAS 2006, Pakistan pursuing defensive deterrence

Our place is quite close to venue on the stadium, kda side. We could watch tanks and APCs practsie from our roof, their growls are heard easily when they practise in the grounds. Rangers and Army regular infantry is everywhere on guard, choppers, both on security patrol and Mi-17s on display and SSG display duties hover over our place and can be seen landing and taking off. The noise from the rotors echoes all over. Excellent stuff! :k:
I’d be going tomorrow hopefully. InshAllah.

**Unprecedented security for Karachi defence exhibition

**Karachi: Unprecedented security arrangements have been made for the international defence exhibition, which was opened in Karachi last evening by President Pervez Musharraf.Delegates from more than 50 countries, including United States, France, Britain and China, are participating in the fourth four-day International Defence Exhibition Ideas 2006; Arms For Peace organisers said. More than 225 companies, including several Pakistani companies, are displaying their products. However, India Pakistan’s nuclear rival has not been invited like the previous years, they said.A senior police officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that more than 18,000 police and paramilitary rangers have been deployed not just around the exhibition centre, but also on the entire route on which delegates will travel from their respective hotels.Dozens of police vehicles were doing flag march in the city blaring sirens, while paramilitary rangers armed with assault rifles were positioned on every bridge, strategic building, and square of the city.“Snap checking of vehicles are also been done on key places,” the police official said. Many key roads are being closed for traffic for hours at a stretch to provide security to the delegates, annoying local resident. The government has also announced the closure of schools. Police sources said several members of the banned militant groups have been arrested, but most of them were released after initial questioning.“We are taking no chance. We want this international event to go on smoothly,” the police official said.Banned militant groups have a history of carrying out attacks, including suicide bombings, on western concerns, top government officials and religious minorities in Karachi. Extremists, many having links with Al Qaida and the Afghan Taliban, are opposed to their country’s cooperation in the US-led war on terrorism.
Major General Syed Absar Hussain, Director General of Defence Export Promotion Organisation had told reporters that a new Pakistan-made armoured personnel carrier (APC) named Saad will be unveiled for the first time at exhibition. The APC is equipped with Battle Field Management Systems, including computerised command, control, communication, intelligence and information systems.
Pakistan will also put on display the improved versions of Al Khalid battle tank and Super Mushak single-piston engine aircraft, besides various other upgrades, he said.

Re: IDEAS 2006, Pakistan pursuing defensive deterrence

Ooohh... anyone have information on what the Saad APC is? Is it a modification of the M113 like the Talha or something different altogether?

Also - what improvements to the Al-Khalid?

**Musharraf devours weaponry display with seafood
**
KARACHI: The ‘Mobility Display’ at the inaugural session of IDEAS 2006 was thoroughly enjoyed by a smartly turned out audience of at least a couple of thousand in front of the newly created “battle field” at the Expo Center where Pakistan’s ground weaponry was showcased Monday.

Seated in the first row of an elevated platform along with the audience, that mainly comprised men and women in uniform of various countries, President Musharraf looked extremely excited as if the display of his men with their war implements was unfolding exactly in a manner that he had minutes before explained while declaring the four-day show open.

Pakistan’s indigenous product, the Al-Khalid battlefield tank, turned out to be the major attraction for visitors, particularly those from abroad, with its excellent display on and off the ridges of the “war stage”.

But it was not the Al-Khalid alone that found favour. Zarrar and Saad were the two other versions of this ground weapon on which Pakistani troops showed their dexterity with skill and confidence. Besides, there were armed personnel carriers (APCs), logistic machines such as filling oil tankers and bowsers and defence rovers. These vehicles were driven across sand dunes with sheer expertise by various batteries of men in khakis.

The scene resounded with the noise of heavy weapon machines and the thunderous sounds of intermittent blasts across the field. The Khattak dance, a cavalry show with horse-mounted men and an unarmed combat display by army commandos were some of the other attractions at IDEAS.

A sumptuous buffet dinner was the last item of the evening, with a highlight of fish and prawns. Live performances by Pakistan’s young singers and models at the end of the president’s speech in the make-shift but fully air-conditioned and gaily decorated hall received a warm response from the audience, particularly the foreigners who perhaps equaled or outnumbered the local personnel of the armed forces.

The newly opened flyover at National Stadium remained in exclusive use of IDEAS participants. The authorities had introduced stringent security measures for the event. The floodlit lights of the National Stadium were in full operation right from dusk. There were unconfirmed reports that Gen Musharraf had landed at the nearby National Stadium by helicopter as he avoided the land route because of increased security.

Re: IDEAS 2006: 'Pakistan pursuing defensive deterrence'

Maddy, SAAD is also a modifcation of the M113, but exactly what modifications, I'm not sure yet. SAAD was launched 2-3 years ago, I wonder if this is the same or a further modified version being displayed for the first time in public. Also little clue yet abt what latest improvements in Al-Khalid and Mushak.

Re: IDEAS 2006: 'Pakistan pursuing defensive deterrence'

just one question?/
where does revenue go from sale of defence equipment??

how are these defece facilites are run? are they paying taxes and duties if any in case of sales. how are these funds of profits injected to armed forces? or defence facilites or used as payments for defence imports?

I you can give real answers i dont want RealDeal ;).

Re: IDEAS 2006: 'Pakistan pursuing defensive deterrence'

Revenue goes to the company which produces the equipment, and some to the government. The companies usually invest it back into the company (i.e. for R&D) or for whatever other reason, and government would most likely spend the revenue on something similar (i.e. invest it in the company or add to the defence budget). Though, most of the defence companies are owned by the government. I've never heard of any taxes on sale of defence equipment, but government can interfere and raise the price of the product for political reasons. For example, Gov't of US sold (Boeing) F-16's to Israel for a very cheap price, then sold very similar (Boeing) F-16's to some South American country for double the amount.

Guys look who showed up at the show… No less the then Raytheon, Northrop, and Lockheed Martin… This has gotten big:)

Pakistan holds ‘arms for peace’ fair
By Syed Shoaib Hassan
BBC News, Karachi

Missiles are the most common Pakistani exhibit in the fair
Pakistan is bolstering its position as a trading zone for small arms and military hardware through arms fairs that have become a regular feature in recent years.
The International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (Ideas) fair, held every

two years in the southern port city of Karachi, provides a platform for Pakistan to display its products, ranging from light arms to tanks and missiles.

The fair also attracts major manufacturers of arms and military support equipment from around the world.

Since 2000, when the first Ideas fair was held, the number of participants has grown both in number and prestige.

This year’s participants include, among others, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, Saab, Rolls Royce and Thales.

Some governments also have an official presence. The UK is represented by the Ministry of Defence.

‘Global security’

“We are looking to promote industrial cooperation in products which are geared towards the war on terror and humanitarian operations,” the press secretary at the UK High Commission, Adam Thomas, told the BBC.

The theme of the five-day fair, which was inaugurated by President Pervez Musharraf on Monday, is Expanding Global Security.

Mike McCarthy says Colt’s assault rifle can win customers

Arms for Peace is the official slogan of the fair.

On show are products ranging from rifles and bullets to ballistic missiles, pilot less drone aircraft and fighter jets.

Lockheed Martin Corp (LMC) has put its Hellfire missiles on display.

“Pakistan is interested in buying these missiles and we are definitely going to work out a deal,” said Doug Terrell, LMC’s manager for international business development.

The missiles became famous during the war on terror and are known to have hit many targets in Afghanistan and the Pakistani tribal areas.

LMC is also promoting its coveted F-16 Fighting Falcon as well as the more affordable P-3C Orion and C-130 aircraft.

“We have (displayed) a limited range in view of the customers who would be here,” says Dexter Henson, the communications director of LMC.

Old and new

The buyers, as in any arms fair around the world, are mostly from Asian and African countries that have low budgets and, as many anti-weapons campaigners would allege, poor human rights records.

Buyers were crowding to the American manufacturer Colt’s small arms stall where the company’s manager of international sales, Mike McCarthy, explained the virtues of a Colt M4 carbine, “the assault weapon of the US army”.
Pakistan says its drone spy aircraft is as good as any

“We hope to offer it for sale to the Pakistan government,” he said.

Pakistan has showcased its usual products, such as long range missiles and two battle tanks, al-Khalid and al-Zarrar.

But it has also displayed some new items, such as a locally manufactured pilot less drone aircraft.

It has also displayed the prototype of JF-17 Thunder jet, manufactured jointly with China.

There is also a variety of electronic warfare devices and small arms made in Pakistan which some visitors described as “impressive”.

How much of a boost they will prove to Pakistan’s arms trade remains to be seen.

Re: IDEAS 2006: 'Pakistan pursuing defensive deterrence'

Holy smoke guys! I had the time of my life there on Thursday and am dying to go again Friday but am also trying to make it to the field display by the 3 forces at Manora on Fri. Let's see. Managed to get just 4-5 pictures, will be posting them soon.

PP, youre right! This is BIG and getting bigger! Everyone BIG was there, like mentioned in the above report, plus many more.

One most interesting thing was the stall of the Arms Manufacturers from Darra Adam Khel! And their stuff was amazing. It was an excelent move to include them. It's a very competitive industry covered under a shade of illegal arms use prevalent majorly in the NW parts of the country. The arms produced there are reliable, cheaper and perfectly legal if used under prescribed laws and regulations. The only thing wrong is that they can produce anything from a copy of a Glock pistol to replicas of antique guns, and heavy assault guns as well. A version/copy of the Glock pistol cost about Rs 20000. While the original costs about Rs 350000-400000 here. True this all has much issues involved, but it was good to see this industry being recognized.

Re: IDEAS 2006: 'Pakistan pursuing defensive deterrence'

Its great to hear the Derra people are getting due recognition. Although from what I hear, buying it directly from derra is far cheaper...

Re: IDEAS 2006: 'Pakistan pursuing defensive deterrence'

^That's true PP, the pistol costing 20000 in Khi will surely be atleast a few thousand less up north.

Re: IDEAS 2006: 'Pakistan pursuing defensive deterrence'

That sounds huge and awesome exhibition.

Haris did you see the bullet proof car made by Heavey Mechanical complex Texila ?

Re: IDEAS 2006: ‘Pakistan pursuing defensive deterrence’

^Yup Codey! it was amazing! It was a black Corolla and they had placed it at the HIT section along with Al-Khalid, Al-Zarrar and Saad. They also had a seperate door and window diaplayed beside it that had bullet marks all over without shattering or penetrating. Excellent works by HIT :k:
