Selection Process:

In making their initial choices, the selection panel of Gavaskar, Mike Atherton, Sir Richard Hadlee, Clive Lloyd, Jonty Rhodes and Aravinda de Silva took a range of key factors into account comprising:

  • players' overall career records in both Test and ODI cricket
  • their form in both Test and ODI cricket over the past 12 months
  • their overall playing records against Australia and their performances against the world champion team in Australia
  • players' positions in the LG ICC Rankings for both Test and ODI cricket
  • the distinctive characteristics of the venues in Melbourne and Sydney which will host the games

Gavaskar explained that in making their choices the selectors had looked for qualities and character beyond statistical achievement. "While statistics were a significant form guide, we placed more importance on our knowledge of the players, their ability to perform on the biggest stage and their character in taking on such hardened opponents as Australia," he said. "We want the best flair and talent in the world, but we also need players with the qualities to dig deep when the going is tough and take advantage of any weaknesses or errors in the Australians' game."

Try selecting eleven players for test and ODI's...who do you select, who do you drop...

Inzamam keen to lead World XI
With the preliminary squads having been announced for the World XI to take on Australia in September, Inzamam-ul-Haq has revealed how delighted he would be to play the lead role in bringing the Australians down a notch. Inzamam, Michael Vaughan and Graeme Smith are the only current captains included in the 30-man squad, and one of them appears likely to take on the mantle for the three one-day internationals and one-off Test.
Inzamam has 21 centuries in his 100 Tests, but has performed poorly against Australia in recent times. Speaking to The News, he said a chance to lead in the Sydney Test would be something of a dream come true. “Honestly speaking, just being selected for the World XI would be satisfying enough as it would be a recognition of my performances for Pakistan in recent months,” he said, “but if I get a chance to lead the World XI then it would be the icing on the cake for me.”

The captaincy debate will be settled in the coming months with Pakistan bidding for a first-ever series win in the Caribbean, and Vaughan hoping to wrest back the Ashes from Australia after 16 years of misery. Smith has blotted his copybook with a suspension during the current series in the West Indies, a penalty that might well rule him out of contention for the ODIs against Australia.

“Much will depend on our West Indies series,” said Inzamam. “If I’m able to win, I’ll be in line to lead the World XI surely.” He admitted that the assembly of talent at his disposal was quite awe-inspiring. “It would be a great honour to lead a side with the world’s best talent,” he said. “Having a batting line-up consisting of Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar, Jacques Kallis, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag and bowlers like Muttiah Muralitharan, Shoaib Akhtar, Steve Harmison, Andrew Flintoff, Makhaya Ntini and Irfan Pathan at your disposal, it would make captaincy very interesting and rewarding.”

The squads for the Super Series will be pared down to 20 in July and then down to 13 a month before the matches. However, the ICC has confirmed that the captaincy could even be given to someone not currently leading a national side, a move that will surely pique the interest of the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara.

Re: ICC Super series. Rest of the world Squads named

inzi does not deserve to lead the world XI…he is not captain’s material and i would be extremly disappointed to see him leading the world XI…but he should be in world XI’s squad for sure…

Re: ICC Super series. Rest of the world Squads named

I agree inzi is not the captian matieral speically to lead world XI. However, unless they decide not to pick a current captain (i.e. inzi, vaughn, smith), I would say inzi has a chance to be picked as a captain specially for the ODI squad. Smith will be probably out in the ODI’s. Otherwise they have players like dravid, pollock, lara for consideration. For the test, vaughan and smith will be the contenders and vauhghan performace in ashes will be monitored as well.

Re: ICC Super series. Rest of the world Squads named

The ultimate challenge to Australia’s cricketing supremacy came a step closer today with the announcement of the ICC World XI squads of 20 players for the Super Series in Australia this October.

Heading a star cast of batsmen are Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Michael Vaughan, Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag who all average above 50 in Tests against Australia. Steve Harmison, Shoaib Akhtar, Muttiah Muralitharan and Makhaya Ntini are included among a potent squad of bowlers, while Andrew Flintoff and Shaun Pollock lead a clutch of world class allrounders.

After missing out on selection in the original squads of 30, West Indies captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul has been included in the ICC World XI Test squad after averaging more than 77 over his last 13 Tests. Another squad newcomer is Harmison, the England fast bowler. He has been picked for the one-day squad after some impressive form in the NatWest Series.

The strength and depth of the squads is highlighted by the quality of players that Sunil Gavaskar’s selection panel has been forced to exclude. Missing from the original Test squad of 30 are VVS Laxman, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Chaminda Vaas, while no place could be found for Marcus Trescothick, Sanath Jayasuriya or Darren Gough among the one-day International specialists. The dream of taking on the world champion team has also ended for Andrew Strauss, Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan, Naved ul Hasan, Danish Kaneria, Yousuf Youhana, Shoaib Malik and Andre Nel.
It was an almost impossible task to cut down the original squads to just 20 players," said Gavaskar, the chairman of the selection panel. “To leave out players of the calibre of Laxman, Sarwan, Vaas, Strauss, Trescothick and Harbhajan Singh was very difficult. At the same time we also took current form into account, which is why Shivnarine Chanderpaul came into the Test squad and Steve Harmison forced his way into the reckoning for the one-day games.”
While banking on proven performers, the selection panel of Gavaskar, Mike Atherton, Sir Richard Hadlee, Clive Lloyd, Jonty Rhodes and Aravinda de Silva also placed faith in a number of the game’s brightest young stars. Brendon McCullum, Kevin Pietersen and Shahid Afridi have been chosen for their outstanding form in recent months and the impression made on seasoned judges who have monitored their performances.

South Africa has six players across both squads, Pakistan has five, England and India four, West Indies three and New Zealand and Sri Lanka each have two representatives.

With the final squads of 14 for the ODI series and 13 for the Sydney Super Test due to be selected in mid-August, Atherton said there is still time for players to stake a compelling case for inclusion over the next six weeks: “It must be disappointing for the guys who haven’t made it into the squads of 20,” he said, “but they shouldn’t give up hope. Form and fitness will still be taken into account at the final meeting; we may need to replace injured players and if someone like Andrew Strauss for example has an outstanding Ashes series, there could be a case for us to consider bringing him in.”

Of the 26 players selected, 14 are named in both the Test and ODI squads, six are included in the Test squad alone and there are six players nominated as ODI specialists. The final squads of 14 for the ICC World XI ODI team and 13 for the Test squad will be selected and announced in August, when a captain, or captains, will also be named. A World XI coach and management team will also be appointed.

Re: ICC Super series. Rest of the world Squads named

inzi has grown on me he is the best type of leader there is he leads by example he trusts his players to perform and inspires them wid his calmness we are lucky to have him who else wud u have lead the world xi given the squad it cant really be dravid or lara the only alternative is smith who might well end up leadin the teams but inzi is right up there he might not shout yell or appear to be active but it all goes up there in that head of his and at the end of the day no matter wat the situation is he seldom lets the team down

Re: ICC Super series. Rest of the world Squads named

So why don't we start guessing the 11 players who will be eventually playing from the world XI side in the test match on October14. We can also do the same for the 3 ODI's. Lets see who will comeup with the closest guess.

Re: ICC Super series. Rest of the world Squads named

Shoaib Akhtar selected in both forms of Cricket? This will make 'the game' very pleased. :D

Re: ICC Super series. Rest of the world Squads named

I used to think the same specially during Samsung cup and Pak tour of Australia. I think if you follow his performance (as a captain) from Samsung cup till the last series played in West Indies, Inzi has changed/learned a lot as a captain. I think he is a much better and matured captain now. He deserve to lead as a captain. He’d be a good choice instead of Vaughan (don’t take English language into consideation when deciding for a captain).

Re: ICC Super series. Rest of the world Squads named

Michael Atherton who is one of the selectors for ICC World XI said that the captain will be picked once they trim the squad down to 14. He also said that the captain must be someone with people's skills to gel such a varying group together quickly. Keeping these two criteria in mind. we have

Michael Vaughn
Brian Lara
Inzi
Dravid

as top contenders. The question I have is whether Vaughn will make the final cut of 14? If not, then i would go for Dravid as captain.

Re: ICC Super series. Rest of the world Squads named

What kind of captain quality does Dravid have apart from being a good batsman? And on the same note Inzi is as good batsman as Dravid and Inzi is more experienced as a captain compared to Dravid. The only thing Inzi lack is English language and I hope you are not picking Dravid on his ability to speek good English.

Re: ICC Super series. Rest of the world Squads named

Considering the captain would have to lead such a diversed group I would go for Dravid even ahead of Vaughan. The ability to speak English is not important when you are leading the national side of Pakistan. But when you have to lead World XI I think they will have to keep in mind that the captain should be able to communicate with the other players. It's not just a one off match, it's a whole series. As far as language skills go Dravid would be placed ahead of Vaughan anyway cause apart from speaking English Dravid can also communicate with any Indian or Pakistan players selected in the side using Urdu/Hindi. Plus I think Dravid is a much better batsman then Vaughan. In the series I doubt with all these brilliant players from all over the world the captain alone would be making all the decisions anyway without consulting others. Even if Dravid becomes captain he will definatley get input from people like Lara, Kallis, Inzimam, Sachin, Vaughan etc. So I think while on the paper there would be one captain but in reality that captain would have a lot of good brains at his disposal since most of these successul players didnt achieve it on talent alone they also did it cause they have a good thinking head on their shoulders.

Re: ICC Super series. Rest of the world Squads named

I dont think captaincy would be an issue. Vaughan will and should be the captain. He is good enough to make the team as a batsman, have a good record agaisnt australia and quite impressive captaincy record.

Re: ICC Super series. Rest of the world Squads named

I dont know if he is good enough to get in the side as batsman. Let's say we take out one spot for a wicket keeper and 3 bowlers and 1 all rounder. That leaves 6 open places. Kallis will definatley get in since he is not just a great batsman but also a very useful bowler. So now we have 5 places for batsman. Let's start off with some sure shot inclusions. Lara, Sachin and Inzimam. That leaves 2 open spots for batsman. With such a strong batting line up I wont be surprised if they either include 4 bowlers and an all rounder or 3 bowlers and 3 good all rounders (I am sure they would like 6 geniune bowling options) So maybe 1 or 2 spots to go around some fine bastmen like Gibbs, Jaysuria, Sehwaq, Dravid, Laxman, Younis (i doubt he'll make it) etc. Anyway the point is Vaughan wont be an automatic selection in the side and should consider himself lucky if he get's picked in the final 14.

Re: ICC Super series. Rest of the world Squads named

I know instead of 14 I was only calculating 11 players but Vaughan will have to break into the final 11 to captain the side anyway.

Re: ICC Super series. Rest of the world Squads named

i think its gonna be

  1. graeme smith
  2. michael vaughan
  3. rahul dravid (c)
  4. brian lara
  5. andrew flintoff
  6. jacques kallis
  7. brendon macullum +
  8. shaun pollock
  9. shoaib akhtar
  10. steve harmisson
  11. muralitharan
