Re: ICC ranking
ICC ranking and its importance plus consequence of low ranking:
I was thinking that Azhar was worse Pakistan ODI Captain. It is true that Azhar performance as Captain was pathetic, but Captain that took Pakistan to 9th rank ODI team was Misbah.
Pakistan got demoted to 9th Rank in April 2015 … Thus Misbah resigned just before ICC updated their annual ranking table (when Pakistan knew from their performance that in updated table, Pakistan would be 9th … as BD who was 9th below Pakistan had improved their points a lot, while Pakistan lost points. Unfortunately, Misbah did not only resigned but colluded with Waqar Younis, to get Azhar appointed as ODI Captain (even though Azhar was not even part of ODI team since Jan 2013 … and was considered as unsuitable for limited over matches).
Irony is that, first ODI series Pakistan played under Azhar captaincy was against BD, and Pakistan lost to BD 3-0.
Anyhow, on 30 April 2015, Pakistan ODI ranking was 9th. Here is ODI Ranking table on 30th April 2015 …
https://en.dailypakistan.com.pk/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/112.jpeg
Pakistan was fortunate to reach rank 8th by 15 Sept 2015 … not because of their own effort but because WI kept playing badly. If Pakistan had not reached rank 8th by 15 Sept 2015, they would not have got qualified to play Champions trophy in June 2017.
Since then, under Azhar, ODI rank 8 and rank 9 was oscillating between WI and Pak. Actually, before ODI in April 2017, Pakistan was ranked 9 and WI was ranked 8, but Pakistan 2-1 win against WI in April 2017 took Pakistan to rank 8 from rank 9.
Another important ranking position is to play for World cup automatically or play qualifying matches to have a place in world cup. Cut off date is 30 Sept 2017. Pakistan has to be ranked 7 or better to qualify for world cup automatically.
It is because of this situation, Pakistan postponed BD tour in April 2017, because loosing against BD would mean BD getting so ahead that Pakistan would not be able to catch them in ranking … and thus, would be lingering on rank 8 at best.
After postponing BD tour, Pakistan dropped Azhar and appointed Sarfraz as Captain. Since then, Pakistan played 8 ODis and won 6. Pakistan ranking has gone up from 8th to 6th, and there is hope that if Pakistan rank stays 7 or above, Pakistan would not play qualifying matches for World cup.
We should remember that points are such that one bad series and Pakistan could easily go down to rank 8. For instance, here is points difference:
5th rank New Zealand points = 111
6th rank Pakistan points = 95
So, with 16 points difference, to overtake New Zealand by Sept 2017, is impossible.
How about teams at rank 7th (BD) and rank 8th (WI):
6th rank Pakistan points = 95
7th rank BD points = 94
8th rank SL points = 93
So, for them two to takeover Pakistan is possible. Anyhow, SL got defeated by Zimbabwe in last ODI, and that means, them overtaking Pakistan before 30 Sept 2017 is unlikely … also means, Pakistan would qualify for world cup automatically and would not play qualifying matches.
Note: If Pakistan had done badly in Champions trophy, especially lost to SL … that would have ended Pakistan chance to play semi-final too … but Sarfraz partnership with Amir made it possible for Pakistan to win … than there would have been no chance that Pakistan would have qualified for world cup (in 2019) automatically and thus would have been playing qualifying matches in 2018 to qualify for world cup.
