Is Punjabi taught as a subject?
Re: I was reading Wikipedia and came across an entry for list of Punjabi newspapers.
i think the reason being Pakistani Punjabis [Muslims] did NOT adopt to Gurmukhi script...i dunno if Pakistani Gujratis have adopted Gujrati script.
Re: I was reading Wikipedia and came across an entry for list of Punjabi newspapers.
but punjabi is written in shahmukhi too, so thats no reason. not a single newspaper? that can't be true..

oh ok. thanx for the info...that may explain why they have newspapers in Gujrati in Pakistan...it's hard to write Urdu in roman...imagine if we didn't use Urdu script and instead used roman, it would have been tremendously hard to read. i think Turkish people did that...they romanized Turkish script.

Pakistani Gujrati is still written in Gurmukhi script. They have their newspapers and magazines as well
Re: I was reading Wikipedia and came across an entry for list of Punjabi newspapers.
There are some Punjabi Newspapers, but there circulation is limited. Here is link showing names of Newspapers published in different languages of Pakistan. It mentions two Punjabi Newspapers 'Khalsa Akhbar Lahore’ closed after partition and ‘**Khabraan’ started in 2004.

i thought Gurmukhi relates to Punjabi script. Gujrati has it's own alphabets.
btw, Did you know that Jinnah's name was: MoHammad Ali Jinnahbhai...a lot of Gujratis use surname prefix as "Bhai"...probably, Jinnah used "Bhai" as his surname suffix as a result of his his Gujrati heritage!
i wonder why Jinnah dropped "Bhai" bit from his last name!!! any clue?

I can't recognise different formats of Gurmukhi, but Gujrati is still written like 'Hindi' script. Some of our Gujrati friends can read Hindi as well.
As far as Jinnahbhai is concerned, its probably for ease. Many friends and nearer people to Mr Jinnah (including Ruttan Bai) used to call him 'J'.

How do they jump directly to that high level, without starting at the lower levels? Look at it this way, when learning Urdu in class 3, we had to read the simple lessons which taught us the basics. Then the lessons kept on progressing in difficulty in each class. Only then were we able to understand class 10 lessons such as writing of Munshi Premchand and Patras Bokhari.
If Punjabi is not taught at the lower levels, how is an official version of Punjabi maintained?

As it is written in Urdu script, there is not much difficulty in following it graduation level. But as I said earlier, I'm not aware, whether it is taught at lower level. Someone from Punjab may confirm it
Re: I was reading Wikipedia and came across an entry for list of Punjabi newspapers.
Punjabi written in nastaleeq is called Shahmukhi, which is the script prevalent in Pakistan.
The word Gurmukhi has religious sikh connotations, hence unacceptable to Muslims. Just like the word Khalisistan.
