While many people like such government funded projects, I have always maintained that such projects are not in public interest in the long run.

Agreed, if not properly run we could have another white elephant in the list. Its better that the government focuses more on governance and leave these kind of projects to the private sector. One pertinent example we already have is of Daewoo company with regards to motorway.
