I need a tracking app

OK, so the fiance and I are going traveling. He has an iPhone, I have an Android. we would like an app so that if we get separated and lost, we can locate each other. It would have to work via gps, because we won’t have telephone service (unless we both buy local SIM cards.) I was thinking Google Latitude might work, but you have to sign up for Google plus which is just seeming very invasive as I’m setting it up. Anybody have any suggestions?

Re: I need a tracking app

What you are asking for is pretty invasive unto itself. You want your cake and eat it too? lol

Re: I need a tracking app

not possible.

gps is the equivalent of having landmarks in the sky to find your position on the earth (and time). gps doesn't let you share your position with someone else. for that you need a data network to share your gps coordinates.

Re: I need a tracking app

I have not used the Apple app called "Find my Friends" for apple products only but the description matches what OP is looking between iphone and Android. It seems possible.

Re: I need a tracking app

  1. Can't you establish a meeting point, such as your hotel?
  2. I think it's easier to buy local SIMs and have phone numbers. They aren't expensive, and it's more reliable to have a phone number. Apps such as these rely on data plans. There are apps such as Glympse that allow you to send ur location with a map (and I think coordinates) via email/text but again, you need a data plan for that. So if ur going to pay for one, might as well get a SIM card.

Re: I need a tracking app

only works if the apple product is on the network. OP wants to go places without network access and find her friend "using gps".

Re: I need a tracking app

Correct. I did not realize that data plan was not an option in the question.

Re: I need a tracking app

^^ yes, and as far as I can think, you'd need a service provider to transmits GPS data and maps, no?

Re: I need a tracking app

Woah, fiance-traveling-Iphone-Andorid!!

as long as there is no PDA, I say its kosher.

Re: I need a tracking app

New term for PDA is "smart-phone" :p

I say stop at the local RadioShack and pick up a pair of walkie-talkies. They have a few mile range and you can 10/4 each other all day long :)

Re: I need a tracking app

Yeah, I think we're going to buy a couple of prepaid local SIM cards. All the other options either won't work without data connection. I do have an app called "Find my Car", where you drop a pin, so to speak, where you park your car, then when you want to go back and find it again, it shows you where you are and where it is, via gps. That will be useful for finding our way back to the hotel or to the start of a bazar or whatever.

Re: I need a tracking app

When you're over 50, you have the good sense not to shun perfectly decent PDAs just because it might shock the young'uns.

Re: I need a tracking app

this you can do. there are a lot of apps that let you preload maps onto your gps device of choice so that when you are in an area without service, you can still see where things are with respect to you. i would still use a non-phone gps device - some of the phones don't let you use gps when cell towersaren't around to triangulate. get an el cheapo hiking garmin or magellan gps.

Re: I need a tracking app

define 'decent' pda

Re: I need a tracking app

Get an Android based phone/tablet, do offline maps and you're good to go. As long as the GPS chip is working you're good to go. You don't need a SIM as long as you can follow a map. It won't give you turn-by-turn direction but you won't be lost in a city. I just used that solution in Istanbul.
Your original question was keeping track of your partner, so that threw everyone off (well, it threw me off).

Re: I need a tracking app

course, on a phone with gps on, your battery life is going to be fairly limited. one more reason to consider a stand-alone gps device if you are serious about not getting lost.

Re: I need a tracking app

my wife has an android and i have the iphone. we use latitude to check each other's location and it has worked quite well for us. you would want to install ladidude (on iphone) and backtitude (on android) also which works in tandem with latitude and gives you additional options like setting the frequency of how often the app should check the location and so on.

we are not signed up for google plus. we both used our gmail accounts to add each other and of course the user has to confirm if they want to be added to your 'friends' list.

Re: I need a tracking app

and i did look into some paid apps also but haven't had too much luck. you can look into GPStracking app but i think it does not offer real time tracking...not sure.

Re: I need a tracking app

When you go in air-plane mode the battery on phones go thru the roof. Plus the stand-alone GPS has only maps for certain areas. Android has maps for a lot more places.

Queer, you selling TomTom as a profession these days or what? I think I've seen you rooting for stand-alone GPS a few different places. :)

Re: I need a tracking app

not if you turn the gps chip on, man. those things suck your battery dry in a couple of hours. plus have you tried turning your phone on in an airplane and making it track location? iphones by definition won't run gps services in airplane mode. androids probably do.. but yup, battery will be done in no time.

you can pretty much get maps for any place you want and load them into a garmin or tomtom. i'm a fan of robust unitaskers when it comes to scenarios where failing isnt an option.
