Any recommendations?
I’d mainly use it for surfing the web and word-processing. Some good photo/film software would be nice too.

my current one is a macbook, tho i am not wedded to macs. in fact, i would prefer something that isn't quite so expensive. also, something lightweight.

You are really wide open here. If you like the portability factor (macbook, air or pro?) then the ultrabooks from samsung or toshiba might be nice. It doesn't seem that you do gaming or use bluetooth etc, then you can also try an elite book, thinkpad or even an xps (not a big fan of dell customer service...).

we have a desktop for gaming.
i did see a thin dell, 14inch with ok reviews. will look further into the ultrabooks.

Considering the fact that even the RAM is non-upgradeable, this is one factor that keeps me away from the air. Many people had a problem with the keyboard warping upwards, but you know people on this forum in the mod team might argue otherwise.
I believe that the Air is competitively priced with its rivals, though Intel was supposed to offer discounts mid to later this year that would subsidize the new offerings. The cons mentioned above led me to choose a macbook pro, but that machine is overpriced no matter if you like it or not. Of course, if you like something then the sky is the limit.
One other one that I forgot to mention is the hp envy. Sony also has sales, so you can try the E or S series at your local store to check which one you like.

I've had an Air for about 3 months now. I use it extensively for pretty much everything. No complaints. Easy to carry and worth every bit. I say spend the money and get a great product. Yes you can find cheaper ones...depends on how much $ is a factor.

I will recommend you HP's laptop. You may use Picasa software for photos. I prefer 15 inch. but 17 inch is also good if you want more display space on your laptop screen.

Processor: any Intel 2.0 GHz
HD: 300 GB (enough for you)
DVD: Reader is enough, but if you want to burn then you may invest little more for writer.

Nikki, so here's the thing. I'm kind of clumsy. I need a new laptop partly because I have spilled so much on this Macbook that it is almost dead after being resuscitated by my brother many times. I am just afraid of what will happen to that Air.
Considering a Toshiba too. Any thoughts?

The Air looks delicate but isn't. It can handle a lot! And if you do a lot of word processing like I do, I gotta tell you that the keys are so smooth baby! I have the 13" and it's so light weight that I can have it on my lap 4-5 hours at a stretch and not feel a thing.
The Toshibas are great too from what I've heard. No personal experience though.

As niks mentioned, because Air does not get warm, you can have it your lap for hours .

I guess I'm just scared about spending the money on something so much more expensive, if I cannot maintain it and will need to replace it in a few years. But perhaps it will inspire me to be more careful. :@:

I used to have a Toshiba.It was the greatest laptop experience.It lasted about 6-7 years.

HP DV6 ! I have been so loyal to HP that i had HP laptop before and it lasted me 5 years and then i went ahead with another HP. Great solid and stylish laptops!
