So I have decided to wear a gharara on this wedding of a friend, designer ones are so expensive, shops in Wembley and Southall etc don’t usually keep them, can’t order it from Pakistan coz of lots of reasons.
Shall I make one myself? What sort of fabric do I need and how shall I make it more fancy?
OMG......I love ghararas.....ammi taught me how to sew one long ago.......there is a special way to cut it to get it just right.
If you want one that hangs really well then make it out of satin......but go for a light-weight satin and lots of gathers.
Make sure that you don't make the top part of the pants too skinny......there needs to be some extra fabric there else it will look really weird.
The one that I made myself was ivory coloured satin......the full suit was the same fabric and I wore heavy pearl jewellery with it.
make sure you dont get a ‘nicker’ gharara as per my tailor’s language where they stitch the chunnat wali flair to plain shirts type top. the top should have 8 ‘kaliyan’ for each leg and the flair should be ATLEAST 3.5 yards for proper fall and chunnat. it required 9 yard of fabric for a regular ‘proper’ wala gharara. and like muzna said, it is cut in ‘uraib’ // sorry for many urdu words
good one. i am also want to make a gharara on my cousin 's mayon+mehndi both will be one same day.
but not want to make in jamawar. So i will ask the translation of satin in urdu ?
okay a question, do I need kaliyan for the top part only which is the knicker/pants part? I thought I need kaliyan for the knee part, so I just make the pleats/chunnat at the bottom part (where the knee starts) (i think it’s called gote) to make it flair?
Tomorrow I'm going to buy the fabric and laces...I've decided to make it look very classic so I'm gonna use probably zari for the gharara and metallic fringe (kiran) for duppatta.
Hareem, do post pics when u finish it.
I can't even imagine sewing a shirt and here you gonna make a gharara, good luck! I'm sure it'll look wonderful InshaaAllah
Kiterunner and miss adorable, I will try to post the pics here. I bought the fabric and laces today, I completely overblew the budget but everything is looking nice so far. I'll be making the gharara tomorrow inshallah. I'm thinking of giving the shirt fabric to a darzan to make but not sure yet, will decide in few days.
^that was for september.....but I don't think I'll be going this year. That entry was written in anger and frustration anyway but yeah we're seriously thinking of buying a house in Pakistan. Who knows! Who knows!
