thank you Enigmatic. I've bought plain satin in ivory for the shirt but I'm a bit scared of handling it so will give it to an Indian seamstress I know (I don't have any experience with silk or satin yet and don't really have much time either), I plan to use lappa kiran for the shirt and duppatta to make it more 1950's look.

Great! I hope you will occupy the kids fully for a few hours and give them dinner so that Hareem can concentrate. Satin is very difficult to stitch, especially if one has not practised on it before.

Sorry I didn't see your post until now. I kept it really simple...the knickers part is pretty straightforward to make and for the bottom I used 3 or 4 yard fabric (don't remmeber it correctly now), made the chunat and sewed it to the knickers. I didn't use any pattern ot template.
