i hate bunto kazmi's work !! :) but manish malhotra is amazing.

i dont understand the hype about bunto kazmi, she creates the same kind of dresses more or less

the new trend of ankle length shirts over a lehenga that everybody seems to be following seems silly and really bad to me,what the point of a lehenga with a shirt that long?

now nilofer shahid knows her stuff and sana safinaz arent bad too,but has anyone checked out manish malhotra this designer from india, (he designs kareena kapoors clothes frequently but that really isnt the cause,he does make amazing apparel.

my wedding is in three months, and i want to go with traditional lehenga and waist length shirt, traditional jewellry, (no coka!) but contemporary make up (no red lipstickk at all ! ) would it look out of fashion.

traditional things are,after all,time less

Re: i hate bunto kazmi's work !! :) but manish malhotra is amazing.

isn't the "traditional" length of a bridal shirt just above the knees? i don't think our mothers or grandmothers wore waist length shirts at their weddings.

the designers you mentioned also make floor length shirts like bunto kazmi.. but maybe you just don't like the type of kaam she does.

as long as the makeup artist uses colours complimenting your skin tone and the colours of your outfit, you should be fine

Re: i hate bunto kazmi’s work !! but manish malhotra is amazing.

I always thought the traditional length of bridal shirt was just above the knees as well. Honestly, I prefer the longer style shirt myself. It looks quite elegant and timeless.

She is describing a more Indian style look with a shorter blouse. It sounds a bit like this:

I dont think the waist length tops look nice its very generic especially here in the uk! And a bride doesnt look complete without a 'koka' or 'nath' even if u wear a sticky bindi on ur nose if its not pierced i think its a must!

I wore longer kameez nath etc! :)

Re: i hate bunto kazmi’s work !! but manish malhotra is amazing.

OP, you don’t have to go with the floor length shirt. Personally though, I don’t like waist length tops because they don’t suit everyone and sometimes aren’t very flattering.

If you don’t like the floor length shirt, you could try something a bit shorter, such as knee length, like these (which are all sana safinaz):

Edit: The first one is Nomi Ansari (my mistake :P)

Re: i hate bunto kazmi’s work !! but manish malhotra is amazing.

ohh the first one is by Nomi Ansari.

Re: i hate bunto kazmi's work !! :) but manish malhotra is amazing.

Manish Malhotra designs are stunning!! Aside from the lengha choli, even he designed long shirts for Kareena and Genelia's wedding events. Forget fashion, it goes in and out so go with what you love! I've never liked waist length shirts so had always intended to get a longer short made for my wedding, which happened to coincide with the current trend. Personally, I would go for something just below my hips at the shortest, but only cause I don't think waist length would be flattering on me. But if you love it and think it looks good - go for it!

Re: i hate bunto kazmi’s work !! but manish malhotra is amazing.

OP, where are you from?

Here in the UK the shorter shirts are more popular.. I think they look lovely on slim girls but aren't as forgiving (or modest obviously) as the longer shirts..

Each to their own..

I have a Manish Malhotra sari.. Would love more of his stuff..

i hate bunto kazmi's work !! :) but manish malhotra is amazing.

I think long shirts are more elegant and timeless in most cases. Sometimes short shirts can look nice but it depends on the design of the lehnga. I'm personally not a fan of Indian clothes. Even what some of the stars wear. The fabrics look so cheap compared to Pakistani clothes.

Re: i hate bunto kazmi's work !! :) but manish malhotra is amazing.

I got married last year and I didn't have a long kameez over my lehenga. I don't like that trend at all on lehengas, it just seems too much fabric to me. So I went with a shorter shirt, not choli...but still small. I'm tall and thin so it looked ok on me. So decide what you like, and also what looks good on you and go for it. Trends don't matter to me anyway, I'll wear what I feel like....because years from now when you look at the wedding pics, it really wouldn't mean much what the trend was at that time.

I also didn't wanna be a very traditional bride because that's just not who I am. So I didn't go with big, loud jewellery or nath either. So really, do what you feel makes you feel comfortable and just be yourself.

Re: i hate bunto kazmi's work !! :) but manish malhotra is amazing.

^I was the same.. I didn't want to wear a nath or look like a traditional bride.. I would have felt awkward made up in a way that wasn't really 'me'

Re: i hate bunto kazmi's work !! :) but manish malhotra is amazing.

my family is insisting i wear a nath,my mother in law too,(already bossy :) ) but she'll cave if i tell her i dont want to,but my family is like,a bride doesnt look like a bride without a nath, and i tell them a bride doesnt look look anything to anyone because the nath hides the face :(,and yeah thats not really me..anyway they can take me to lynch me i wont wear a nath :)
im surprised so many people (infact everyone) don't like choli length lehengs,i just thought if not completely plastered they went well with a womans figure, i mean the whole dress giving the appearance of narrow from the start (upper part near the neck) and gradually widening out with the waist with the lehenga being the widest (matlab big ghair), i thought that would look a bit more princess like (lol i know) but i did see a bride who had a bit of a short height looking even shorter with a choli lehenga, but it might have been the colour that did not compliment her...a burnt ,and this girl was extremely pretty.
do you guys think it might go with a thinner girl, about 5'4 but yeah (curvy :()

Re: i hate bunto kazmi’s work !! but manish malhotra is amazing.

unless a bride has the figure and the grace to pull a short top off, like the one below (outfit by Bunto Kazmi, btw ) i would advise avoiding it.
its not flattering, and neither are muffin tops which most skinny girls still sport.

a traditional gharara (which is what most of our moms and grandmother’s wore to their weddings), like the one DA posted above in the jewel tones, has a knee length shirt. As well, when you opt for a longer shirt, for eg: halfway down your calves, then the idea is for your shirt to be heavier and fuller of kaam i.e. the focal point vs. the lehenga. in that case, the lehenga is generally lighter. longer shirts tend to look slimming and elongate your figure. regardless of length, fitting is key so make sure your shirt fits well. not too tight and not too baggy.

(also, its generally not a good idea to start off your wedding preps fighting your family- it ruins the vibe for everyone. just a thought.)

Re: i hate bunto kazmi’s work !! but manish malhotra is amazing.

^I agree that it takes quite a nice figure to pull off a shorter top or choli but it isn’t just about being thin though. I’ve seen shorter/choli-type tops look quite awkward on thin girls, including myself. Recently, I tried on an Indian style outfit with a choli top for an Indian friend’s engagement party and it looked quite horrible in my opinion. As I’m very thin but not terribly toned, it made me look like a 10 year old anorexic and was not flattering at all. Needless to say, I ended up not getting it. I think that in order for a shorter top, especially a choli, to look good, the bride should have a rather toned stomach (as in not a muffin top but not too thin either).

The outfit I tried on looked similar to this one below. I don’t know if it really looked as bad as thought (or maybe that was just my impression as I’d never tried on anything that revealing before and I’m not keen on Indian clothes) but all I can say about that is…never again.

Re: i hate bunto kazmi’s work !! but manish malhotra is amazing.

I don’t think the OP meant a choli style top, just a waist length shirt.

like someone said earlier, to each their own. go with what suits you and makes you happy. trends change and years from now it won’t matter. longer shirts do tend to be more generally forgiving i think. i recommend you try on different styles and see what works with your body shape.

Just to point a couple of things out - if you have a heavy bottom border on a short shirt (as in the first picture below) it draws the eye horizontally around your waist / hip area making you look broader than you are and possibly not as tall as you could. Also, not sure if others have faced this problem, but for the one short worked top i had, the edges tended to curl up instead of settling down flat.

here are a few others for inspiration:

this is a beautiful dress in the same length by sabyasachi, also an Indian designer

this, while not waist length, is close to the traditional length

as is this

both of these are recent dresses by pakistani designers (don’t remember which ones though)

Re: i hate bunto kazmi's work !! :) but manish malhotra is amazing.

this is getting to be long, but as for the nath and makeup thing, look around and you'll realize a lot of brides aren't wearing naths (i'm not either) and going without red lipstick - or with but with more contemporary makeup. it's pretty cool actually, all the different looks brides have nowadays.

my family's been saying the same thing - a bride doesn't look like a bride without a nath. i suggest showing them some pictures of pretty brides without it so it maybe sinks in a bit? i've collected a hoard of pictures off these forums and have been using them to present my family with ideas visually instead of trying to explain them verbally. :P
