I do not like Urdu

:smack:

Not me. I love Urdu.

I spoke to someone recently who was originally from Pakistan but living here now. He was really nice but his English was terrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrible. I dont mind that though. So I tried to converse in Urdu with him but he would reply in English that would take me a minute to understand.

When I asked him why he only speaks in English, he replied with “we dont speak Urdu in my family, only English. I do not like Urdu”. Aray bhai, if you only speak English to phir apki Angrezi ab tak theek kyun nahin huwi? I didnt say that of course but only responded with “I see”.

:konfused:

Am I missing something here? Is this a new trend?

Re: I do not like Urdu

I don't like the Urdu itself only.

I don't know habibi, whatever floats their boat. Someone not being too proud of their mother language, that is kind of pathetic. But I have seen people not too proud of their parents - to the point of hiding them from the guests. So yeah, the former doesn't seem as pathetic anymore.

Re: I do not like Urdu

Lol, that's hilarious. Seems he's embarrassed about his native language.

Here's what I don't get. What is up with some people (in the US) speaking Urdu with an American accent? The kids hear their parents say words in Urdu with the correct accent...so why is that hard to emulate? I know a family where the oldest child speaks Urdu with the correct accent.....and all the younger siblings have the American accent to their Urdu. How does that happen? They grew up in the same house, the parent still continues to speak the language. Why the disparity in accent?

Re: I do not like Urdu

People in Pakistan see it as a status thing I suppose. Usually only people with money can go to school and afford to learn English. When I visited Pakistan I remember my cousins found it pretty cool how I could speak so casually whereas their English, although not bad, was still a second language. I don't understand why people try to force it though. Because all the cool kids do it?

To be honest, I'm more worried that if and when I have kids, they won't know any Urdu at all because me and my brothers speak in English and I only converse in Urdu with my parents. I think it's important to at least have some knowledge of your language. A lot of Serbian kids I know went to Serbian School on Saturdays to learn their language. I think desi people should do something similar or at least take some time to teach your kids how to converse in Urdu at least. And those who struggle with English should definitely not try to act elitist.

By the way, you're way too polite. Or maybe I'm an ass lol. I would've said something sarcastic probably.

Re: I do not like Urdu

Oh and something else about language that makes me angry. In my family, me and my brothers speak Urdu to our parents. And not in an American accent like mentioned above but with a normal accent. Our vocabulary might be limited but grammar and everything is perfect.

Then there's my dad's friends' kids came here after us, were older when they came, and insist on speaking English with their parents too. Like they're so immersed that they forgot Urdu. And their parents speak English to them as well. Talk about trying too hard.

Re: I do not like Urdu

So you want to retain the desi-ness??

OP.....Many people have inferiority complex in Pakistan......same goes for Punjabi.......people think speaking punjabi makes them 'paindu'......urdu is better than punjabi......and english is better than urdu..

English>Urdu>Regional Language...

Pathetic loosers i must say!

Re: I do not like Urdu

Ive seen an aunty telling her grandson;
“beta milk pee lo” and “door band karain”

Re: I do not like Urdu

Nomi california has a point :)

Ghost14, be it Urdu, English, or any other language, we should not always seek perfection. sometimes people make intentional mistakes to disarm the listener or opponent. Even if the mistakes are not intentional, it's the message that counts, not so much the wordings.

The more educated, the more trying to impress others (ofcourse not everyone does so, but the list is quite long).

Re: I do not like Urdu

This is no new trend , its simply called ‘phitaawa’ Pakistan jab thay to koi khaab o khiyaal mein bhi nahi tha k UK ya USA jaana hai ..aur wahan koi naam o nishaan bhi nahi tha English bolnay ka. To jab yahan aatay hein Sab samjhtay hein k bas .. ab ham english man ho gay hain ..urdu bolnay ki koi zaroorat nahi .. lekin unhein yeh nahi samjh aati k urdu is still part of ur heritage no matter wat u speak ..

its not just with language Reha.. I ve seen here in UK close ppl who i ve know in pakistan personally but when they got here ..they are totally different ppl in terms of mel milaap, conversation, aana jaana .. you know it totally changes yet when they were in pakistan .. they were nice friendly and decent ppl aur idher aak k ..whats the term ..‘‘become stuck up’’ ..

Re: I do not like Urdu

It seems like dissing anything Pakistani/urdu is the way to show how modern and elite you are.
