Based on some positive feed back I decided to use it. I needed Windows XP Professional , I thought since it is an old OS people might be selling it off cheap therefore last weekend I started calling people around who were selling it on Craig’s list. One guy sent me a text message. I texted him back to call me . He said he has one copy of OEM Windows XP professional un opened for sale for 60 bucks and that I could go and pick it up from his home about 25 minutes drive away from my home. I did not want to give him a check as per instructions by Craig’s list so I paid him cash , came home installed the software , I wanted to authenticate it from Mirosoft but they refused saying that they did not sell that software and that the key if fake.
It means I paid 60 dollars just for a junk DVD . It was fake , I can buy genuine XP for that kind of money. That guy seemed so genuine. He had nice home , nice cars on the drive way. He told me this is all he does for living , sells stuff on eBay, Amazon , Craigs list etc.
Now the question is how do I get my money back ? I have not called him yet. I want your input and ideas before I call him or report him to FTC and Craig’s list.
That is not nice to laugh at someone becoming victim of a fraud. I mean should you not be a little sympathetic and compassionate.
I did all the right things did I not ?
Re: I became victim of a fraud how do I get my money back.
Just disable the windows genuine advantage add on and you shouldn't get any popups etc.. and it should let you update Windows successfully...
C'mon, nobody sells genuine operating systems on the net, unless a reputable shop... heck the guy at our local PC shop doesn't even use genuine... he bought one genuine CD and gives people copied cd's of that!
As for the guy...... how to get your money back..... where does he live... i'll have it sorted...
mafioso style hand gesture anything for the family :)

Mirch bhai - I'm afraid you may not be in a strong position to file a complaint for this transaction. In many cases that I've seen, the FTC comes back to the buyer claiming that the onus is on them to engage in ethical transactions online, and buying so-called "OEM software" is not an ethical transaction for an end-user/consumer.
OEM (original equipment manufacturer) software is supposed to be distributed only when sold with specified accompanying hardware. When these programs are sold separately from the hardware, or copied, it is a violation of the license with the software publisher, and therefore illegal.
Since OEM software doesn't come with retail packaging, or tech support, some people would sell pirated software advertising it to be OEM. This allows them to make money off copies of the software.
I suspect your CD didn't have a COA - right? Even OEM software has a certificate of authenticity.
Also, if you do more research, OEM versions of Windows XP cost somewhere around $125 - $175, and a a cheaper price like $60 sounds fishy to begin with. Remember, if it sound too good to be true, then it is.
the key if fake.

It had COA too. But looks like it is all printed in china . The DVD is holographic too. As I said I tried to make sure that everything is falling in place right. Now that I think that I missed one part it did not say in his ad. that microsoft will authenticate it too. Because when I revisited I saw some people mentioning that in their ads.
I will call him , but what kind of mixup ? I ended up in his neighbors home because of GPS mixup though , When I was backing out of there I saw him in his own drive way , then he told me that his wife told him about me turning into his neighbor’s drive way , so he is man of family.
I hope you are right , it might be a mix up. But I still wonder what kind of mixup ?
Re: I became victim of a fraud how do I get my money back.
like key got mixed up or some thing, ppl have many things sitting around in there studies.
I don’t think some wants to have bad feedback for 60$ bucks.
Unless you did make it clear that if the cd was original.
Sorry to know about that. I never got any disappointment from eBay. I look at the feedbacks before buying anything from eBay.
Unfortunately Craig’s list does not have that feedback thingy.
I need it for some project I am working on which is based on some applications which run on Windows only. Is there any Linux utility which I can use to run windows applications on Linux ?
