I completely disagree. As much as I hate to say it, Pakistan's education (in general) SUCKS, and so it's not likely that an average Pakistani student there would have such fluent English.
depends on the school you go to....not all schools suck.
No Phati, I learned English from there. I never spoke it in Pakistan because there was no need to, but I knew how to write and our text books were in English and we had to write essays etc. in English. Of course it depends on the school too. If you go to an English medium school in a city, the education system would better than a Government school in a village where kids are sitting under the tree on a taat. I've seen the village education system too. They have English subjects too in schools and the teachers teach English, but the kids are not really willing to learn because they don't need to nor do they have to because they'll be speaking Punjabi and their parents don't force it either because they know once their kids are done with school, they'll most likely be helping them out in the fields. So why push them to learn English? I am sure you've seen kids in villages too and you'd agree that there is no motivation there because there is no need to learn/speak English.
Yes, you learned English from there, but the only reason you can speak it fluently is because you've been living in an English-speaking country for the past 10-12 years now. I'm positive your English wouldn't be as perfect if you had just come from Pakistan.
An obvious example is how people often make fun of "FOBs" because of their English. They could be really smart with computers or whatnot but their English is not fluent. And there's nothing wrong with that, either, I'm just trying to make my point here that it's not common to see a person who is living in a country where the literacy rate is pushing just around 30% and English is a second language to have such fluent English..
I dunno, the only problem I see is with their accent!!!
but those who learn english in pak (My dad) are soo good!! We're so caught up in the slangs and the improper sentence fragments, my english is worse than my dad's. They learn the true british English back home, with its proper grammar and style..
Yea, true that. Often times in schools here the teachers just expect you to know the proper grammer and sentence structure so we never get to learn it the proper way.
But still, I wouldn't say that the average Pakistani's English is BETTER than an American's (or anyone living in an English-speaking country for that matter). It's a bit of a stretch if ya ask me. =\
Phati You are getting confused between SPEAKING ENGLISH FLUENTLY and FOBBY ACCENT.
People who know how to read/write English, don’t you think they can speak it too, that too fluently? I have seen students who came from Pakistan and spoke English fluently, the only problem was their accent.
As for me, when I came to the US 10 years ago, I could speak English fluently in school, it’s just that I had the accent. I have worked on it, it hasn’t completely gone but it’s much better now.
My point is that depending on which school you attend there, some kids speak/read/write BETTER english than kids who were born here in the US. Accent doesn’t matter much as long as you are able to comprehend what the other person is saying. When I came here, my English papers had LESS grammatical errors than kids who have been speaking/writing it since they started attending school.

Ju know wham sayen?
I agree and I am sure you would agree with what I said.
My grandfather (nana jee) spoke some words that I never spoke in the US and had not heard of them, again, because of the slang and the easy way out that we use.
Come on, if we don't know what/how to say something, we say "You know". What does that mean? If we don't know what something is called, we say you know, the THING. **THE THING?!?!?! **Another word we use is STUFF............okay? what is "STUFF"?
I can assure you it’s not just the accent that is a hinderance in their English.
And, like I said…Yes SOME kids may have good English there and just have the accent…but the AVERAGE Pakistani definately does not have better English than a person born and raised in an English-speaking country. Just look at it logically, if you’re in a country where the majority of the people are all speaking another language, vs. a person who is living in a country where EVERYONE is speaking English, who do you think would have better English?! Experience is a better teacher than books.
Okay don’t confuse the average educated American with stupid blondes from Hickville that have trashy English and say statements as if they’re asking a question. Ugh I hate that.
Once upon a time, Phatima was born and living in Pakistan. She had an opportunity to visit the United States. She stayed in the states for a week. When she went back to her pind, people asked her “So phatima, what did you like the best about Amreeka?”
Phatima replied “Mujhe unka Education system bara pasand aaya, wahan par tou bacha bacha angraizi bolta hai”
you thought it was a big deal that even children are speaking English in America (unlike the kids in Pakistan)…well that’s because it’s THEIR LANGUAGE…not because of their educational system
