I say that when people dont want the discipline that a practicing religion requires, but still like to belive in god. they call themselves spiritual
It's not necessarily the required discipline that makes these people say that.. in a lot of cases its that they disagree and not believe the stories, the rules, the punishments etc etc.
Spirituality and religiosity are not contingent on each other, nor are they (or should be) mutually exclusive. Being religious does not guarantee spiritual depth. Being religious is not superior to being spiritual, and being spiritual is not an apology for not being religious. Practicing religion, belief in God, and cultivating your inner life are not the same things.
Does one need organized religion/rituals to spiritually thrive? Can atheists or agnostics not have a higher state of awareness? Never met any formulaic Muslims/Christians/Jews/Hindus who go through the motions in the frenzy to attain salvation, yet remain shallow, and wouldn't know transcendence if it repeatedly hit them on the head? Which incidentally doesn't describe anyone on this forum.
Does simply not drinking, or praying 5x, or identifying kafirs/enemies of Islam as a social service confer spiritual superiority? So many questions, so much konfusions.
Memo to self - Have to read CB's post later when TV is not blaring - this one has a few inswingers, outswingers, reverse swings, doosras and teesras embedded in it!
