Anybody know what the hymen is for, medically speaking? I think the thing is useless, painful and all.

otherwise you would know that with or without INTACT hymen ,there is no CHANGE in you as woman occur.
It is a membraneceous partion between the VGNA & womb (uterus)
It used to be considered important as indicater of virginity when virginity was IMPORTANT.
Now girls claim that they tore there hymen during gym,horse riding & bicycle riding so with or without intact hymen ,no body accuses one to be non virgin ,NOT COOL .
Hymen when obstructing first menstrual flow can cause extreme pain & may need to be cut to open up the back up flow.
Fortunately ,it is not in all women that hymen is painful b/c there is opening in most to bypass any flow to occur without rupturing it which NORMALLY IN OLDEN DAYS USED TO OCCUR ON FIRST INTERCOURSE .
Why does it feel like evrybody needs sex ed.

Islamically - it is the litmus test of virginity or chasteness and there are women specialists who check to see if the hymen in girls of marriage age are still intact. If intact - they are deemed pure; if ruptured - they become suspect and damned.
Mind you - the hymen can be ruptured by exercise or even by normal hygene & living; so, to infer much importance to the hymen being intact and to damn those whose hymen get ruptured without sexual activity is - criminal.
Virginity is a prize amongst muslims ( also amongst other cultures) and the bride brings honour when chaste and looses her chasteness to her husband with a feel of prick-pain and oozing of some blood. You may have seen this 'blood stain on the sheet' being proudly displayed to the gathered well-wishers by the husband as affirmation of the chasteness & honour of the bride.
