So , I wonder how many of us actually take extra hygiene measures when preparing food for the guests
I was invited for dinner by an aquaintance last week and as we stood in the kitchen , talking and preparing dinner at the same time , I saw her :
1- Slit the cardamom pod open with her teeth
2- Then she made roti’s without washing her hands .. I saw her greet every one , lay the dishes on the table and then directly going to the aata and start doing the rotis…
3- When tasting one of the salans for salt , she used her finger to get some on it from the side of the pot … after 5 minutes she wanted to check it again and used the SAME finger in the salan again
Why do we not take care of these details when we are putting in so much effort for the guest:no:
CB, long nails and pets in peoples' homes are other big turnoffs for me.
I went to some girl's house who had cats as pets, and they were roaming around her house so I told her I was petrified of them so she picked them up and locked them in her room. Then without even washing her hands, started cuting mangoes and serving us snacks. Oh god, the excuses I made to not eat anything. Now I just avoid dawats at peoples' homes who have pets.
Same thing with long nails, I wonder how they themselves don't get grossed out.
Oh and people touching their hair and scratching their head/other parts of body while cooking.
I recently heard of something really disgusting- there were fecal traces found in water that's served at restaurants with slice lemon in it. It was at a clinic my cousin works for. Supposedly the waitress who had served the water didn't wash her hands after using the bathroom. Ew.

I once read somewhere a while ago that those lemon slices have to be the most unhygienic and contaminated thing in restaurants...I prefer to stay away from them...
I think everthing in restaurants is pretty much contaminated to be honest  … I can bet, even the best restaurants kitchens visit would leave us devastated
But they are restaurants , at home , one expects to keep the hygiene top priority .. its tiny stuff that really matters … a gori lady i know , when ever she makes tea , she makes them in the cups and and then tastes it using a spoon just to see if its good enough … THE PROBLEM : she uses the same spoon in all th cups
I stopped having tea at her place !
another thing that has often devastated me , say a kebab falls onto the kitchen floor , they just pick it up and put it back into the plate … For gods sake , you use the same shoes in the kitchen with which you go out, your kids come into the kitchen bringing all the crap from the garden with their shoes .. why can you not keep aside that kebab .. I agree i never throw away food either , I cut off the outer layer of the kebab and perhaps eat it myself ( its a sunnah , thats why) … but i would never put it in the tray for the guest
My biggest pet peeve is ppl scratching themselves and then touching food or wiping sweat off with their dupatta and then using hands to pull the roti off the tawwa...their hand just got wet thru the dupatta.....
I try not going into the kitchen when I visit someone's house...coz I know I might come across a few things that might make me gag....
Same with me re: pets etc...I'm so rude I usually go back into the kitchen to wash the cutlery etc before I use it and try not to think about the hygiene issue on their part unless I blatantly see it happening, then I'll politely make excuses if I can!
yeah , I thought i was the creepy one , I really try my best to eat as little as possible when at someone else’s place … I have had several horrid incidents
Once at a social gathering , ( pakistan day celebrations) we were enjoyng pulao rice and suddenly I noticed that what i thought was zeera actually wasnt zeera … guess what it was? .. yup those freaking little black sisri’s .. or what ever they are called ewwwwwwwwwwwww… I was so grossed out , wanted to kill the host for being SO freaking blind
I hope no one comes after me declaring that I am not fit to be a mom one day...
but one of the biggest thing has to be when we are at someones house and the kids insist on helping the mommy(hostess) set the table and they hold the glasses with fingers inside them and handle the cutlery...
or even when the table is all set they think cutlery is a nice toy to play with while the food is getting ready...
with kids you just cant be too sure where their hands were unless you tell them to wash them before handling dishes..but I have seen mothers let them do it just soon after they came inside after playing ball outside...that's a no no for me...
Disclaimer:I love kids and kids who play and kids who help around the house...!!
Chips i totally agree with you mate … infact when i was younger , my mother would beat the crap out of me if i dared touch the cutlery on the table just before the guests arrived … at that time i never knew what the big deal was .. but now i do know …
perhaps kids can help putting the dishes back in the kitchen after the dinner is done
^Speaking of kids, we were in Pakistan during Ramadan, and right before sehri time, a relative was changing her baby's diaper. She cleaned it with wipes, put cream on him, new diapers, and then headed right into the kitchen and made parathas for sehri for everyone.
on chips note... I hate it when u go over to someone's place and when u ask them to pass the glass they give it to holding it from the inside...or when some ppl don't use trays to carry the glasses they will hold them from the inside... gross...
pareezay.... be glad they give you wet dishes and do not use the daman of their kameez to dry off the wet dishes before handing it you.... have had that happen to me....
Have you guys watched Bigg Boss, the Indian version of Big Brother? You wouldn't be able to.
All the housemates are suppose to cook, make rotis and peel the vegetables, etc. And I have never seen any of them wash their hands before. You'd see them sitting around, picking their noses, scratching their heads, and then walk into the kitchen and start cooking. Or do all of that WHILE they are cooking.
