how come couples dont walk together, often when on the road, street, or even in a shopping store or mall?
can’t they walk together?
note. of course i am not speaking about when they are either angry or upset or waiting for an elderly behind or a child.

There is a very famous joke about it.
A western jounalist visited Afghanistan before the Russian war and noticed that women always walked a couple of paces behind men. He asked one Afghan "How so". The reply was "Respect , our women respect their husbands."
After the Russia invaded Afghanistan then this Western jounalist viisted the same village again and saw this time women were walking a few paces ahead of men so he commented I see you guys have progressed now. The reply came "No. It is because of land mines ."

Are you talking about in West or in Desh. It happens more in desh and I guess with people of old values. They used to make a conscious effort in olden days to do so but now I guess people with conservative values in East will practice something like it otherwise they will be walking togather talking about something. It is hard to have a sensible conversation if you have to look back to talk to someone coming behind you. No ?

Male chauvinism has many faces and colors. I would like to have conversation with my wife while walking not try to stay ahead of her to prove that I am macho and I am superior.
