I think I'd do the whole "aap" thing regardless of being around people or not

we both refer to each other with tum at the moment both in private and in public....and i will continue with that since aap for me is more like as if you are talking to your parents or like and elder person..when infact its your spouse......but aap and tum has the same level of respect.

That's how I see it as well.. I'd find it weird to use 'aap' with someone I was sleeping with..
Also, part of my family is Bengali and I dunno if this is cultural or just them being informal but my aunties on that side always use 'tumi' with their husbands instead of 'apne'..
