I don’t have a flat abdomen … yet … but I have been working on it recently and I know very well how to get it right … In brief you need to:
Get good core strength
Get good abdomen exercises
Eat well
Keep good posture
Wear aids
Core strength can be done with pilates exercises
Abdomen exercises other than these include sit-ups and knee ups and medicine ball twists
Eat very little carbs ( I mean no more than two or three spoons of rice each day, 1/4 roti, no fruit juices, one small fruit each day)
Keep your stomach pulled in whenever you remember, but don’t pull it in from the top … concentrate on the lower abdomen and pull that part of it in - it is called the pelvic floor.
Wear body shaping outfits for exercise and wear a corset if you can get one … as a male I can’t go around wearing a corset - but I have strong and wide gym belt (back protector) that I wear in the gym.
Do this for up to 4 weeks you will see results and do this as a lifestyle for the rest of your life then you can get a flat belly within 4 months and keep it that way.

@psyah is it better to reduce your belly fat first by extensive cardio, and then engaging in pilates, sit-ups etc.; or you could straight ahead jump into these exercises? i have heard that doing core strength exercises will give you a hard stomach without reducing the fat i.e. a hard fat abdomen. is it correct?

Control your diet eliminate JUNK FOOD and avoid Cheese, Mustard, Potato, Rice etc
Daily Walk around 20 to 30 mins you will see the change soon

For a flat stomach/abs, 30% is exercise and the rest is all diet, so you really have to be very careful about what you eat. It took me about a year and a half of dedicated work to get a faint 4 pack. It's important that you do both cardio to burn off the fat and strength training to strengthen your core and build up muscle that can continue to burn fat when you're not working out. Pilates and yoga are great for that final toning/shape. I quit eating carbs at night for about 4-5 months and then after that I just reduced my carb intake at night. Overall, carbs were usually the smallest part of my meal and I ate them more in the form of veggies than grains. I would make a sandwich in a lettuce leaf instead of using bread for example. Also the truth is that for some people there's a genetic element to getting a flat stomach. Some people unfortunately no matter how hard they try will not achieve perfect results. But you can still get good results.

Core strength exercises are not really for toning, however, they do give better structure and posture … A person looks better shaped. The body fat exercises need to be done with combination of endurance based exercises and cardio … Cardio alone will take too long. There is no problem in doing this alongside the Pilates … If you have time.

i've a flat abdomen not because of choice but because of medical need. i'm diabetic so i can't afford to let fat deposit in my abdomen area. :) i exercise and eat sensibly plus i do a 1 hour walk daily. that's enuf. :)

aawww...poor Hritik. i often say Shubh Raatrii to my nieces and nephews in India and they laugh because they don't expect me to say that. i surprise them always with my shudh Hindi and shudh dhaarmik solutations. :)
