How to thicken soup without cornflour?

I dont have cornflour or cornstartch at home right now and i am craving for soup. Is there any way i can thicken it without these?

Re: How to thicken soup without cornflour?

are you making chikcen corn soup?

When i dont have a thickening agent i just drink it like that! still tastes yum

Re: How to thicken soup without cornflour?

Just borrow some from neighbors .
There is no way you can thicken it with anything else. Ata/wheat flour will not give good taste to it. I tried it once. :bummer: Under the same situation you are in and neighbors were gone on vacation.

Re: How to thicken soup without cornflour?

^ Yeah i guess i should just borrow it or make thai soup instead, i dont think it needs thickening. I have been craving it for so long now but i dont have the authentic pakistani style recipe lol....i would appreciate if someone here knows how to make it like they serve it in Pakistani Chinese restaurants!

Re: How to thicken soup without cornflour?

You cannot get that taste because they use Kawa/crow/raven instead of chicken for chicken corn soup. :D

Re: How to thicken soup without cornflour?

My mom says that sometimes putting mor ginger (especially minced) can make a gravy thicker....I don't know if it would work with soup.

Equal parts of flour and butter. Do you have all-purpose flour at home? And then on the Internet I read that adding an egg might work..provided you don't cook the egg.

Re: How to thicken soup without cornflour?

ewwwww......btw i was talking about thai soup desi style :p

Re: How to thicken soup without cornflour?

Like in white sauce :hmmm:It might work!

Re: How to thicken soup without cornflour?

add canned creamy style corn :)

Re: How to thicken soup without cornflour?

That will give gingery taste to soup , it is not bad taste . Adding egg and not cook it will not be a good taste for desi taste buds.
Do an experiment with little soup which you can afford to throw if you do not like and if you like then try these tricks for bigger batch of soup.

Re: How to thicken soup without cornflour?

I use oatmeal. It works well for blended soups likes carrot soup, green pea soup, clam chowder, etc. But I have never tried it in chicken corn soup. Maybe if it's ground up first, than put into the soup.

I have heard potato flakes work well too. But I have never tried that.

Re: How to thicken soup without cornflour?

But egg is usually added to Asian soups. You can't really taste it.

Re: How to thicken soup without cornflour?

People use potato starch as a thickening agent. It's worth a shot.

Re: How to thicken soup without cornflour?

Yep it gets cooked . I thought you meant to say that mix it as it is mixed in eggnog , raw .
And do not cook it.

Re: How to thicken soup without cornflour?

How about blending the stock with a small boiled/mashed potato to make it thick?

Re: How to thicken soup without cornflour?

Guys you all are great…loved all the suggestions!
I ended up using powdered oatmeal and it did the trick. As i was making it just for myself, it did the trick, not so thick like the typical corn soup, but fairly creamy. Thankyou all :flower1:

Re: How to thicken soup without cornflour?

You are welcome and do not make it a habit of trying to cook chicken corn soup without corn.
Tomorrow you might come back and say " Guys I do not have chicken , but I feel like having chicken tikka what do I use instead of chicken"
It does not work that way all the time. :@:
Do not get any ideas from my post about kawa corn soup. It is just a myth from Karachi.

Re: How to thicken soup without cornflour?

Oh no....i made cabbage and carrot soup.....i mentioned corn soup just for consistency comparison :D

Re: How to thicken soup without cornflour?

I just remembered another thing which works -- suji! One time I was making mayonnaise in Lahore, and it was monsoon, and I had read in Joy of Cooking that if a thunderstorm is coming up you cannot get the egg and oil to bind, to thicken. And danged if this wasn't true! I could NOT get the mayo to come together. What to do? What to do? So I finely powdered some suji and put that in the mayo and then cooked it in a double boiler (over boiling water) whisking and whisking and it thickened and was perfectly respectable mayonnaise.

Re: How to thicken soup without cornflour?

It is called lay-e in Urdu not mayonnaise. It is used as glue. Book binders use it to bind books and bind covers of the books. The kite makers use it to make kites. :@:
Please don't tell me it tasted good , it does not Yes I have tasted lay-e.
