How to not gain extra weight during pregnancy?

So I’m about 8w pregnant. I’m nauseated all the time and taking phenargan for it. I throw up 2-3 times a day and sometimes just once or not at all. I’m not hungry but I still eat here a d there during the day. I usually get a starving feeling in the middle of the night, which is when I stuff my face with junk :frowning: Even though I don’t eat much during the day, the junk at night is causing me to gain weight, I’m already overweight. Due to PCOS, I have a tendency to put on weight quickly too :(.

My Dr has already told me to not gain more than 15 lbs max and I’m already 5 lbs up at 8w :frowning: what should I do? Any ideas for night time cravings and how to avoid the excessive weight gain?? What did you all do, if anything?

Re: How to not gain extra weight during pregnancy?

Well you need to stop eating junk, start eating healthy with reasonable intervals.

Re: How to not gain extra weight during pregnancy?

dnt eat artificial processed crap it will make you gain weight without giving you any nutrition. make sure there is always healthy food in the fridge so you dnt scoff unhealthy stuff.

I only have appetite for junk at night :frowning: When I look at “healthy” food, I wanna throw up, especially at night. I eat healthy during the day though. I don’t k ow what to do about the night cravings :frowning:

Re: How to not gain extra weight during pregnancy?

so eat well during the day and then have an early dinner.
if you keep eating junk you will keep gaining weight its that simple really

Re: How to not gain extra weight during pregnancy?

have you experimented with healthy food? there are so many varieties of home made meals how can you feel sick at the sight of all of them?

Re: How to not gain extra weight during pregnancy?

stop buying junk.. trust me when you are starving even the healthy foods look good enough to be scuffed down!

Re: How to not gain extra weight during pregnancy?

^ I agree. When you don’t have access to the junk food…healthy food looks good as anything haha.

Hmmm I’ll try getting rid of all the junk here. It’s not like I’m starving at night, it’s just that I wake up in the middle of the night craving junk food. It’s hard to ignore these cravings. Hopefully, these cravings stop quickly :frowning:

Re: How to not gain extra weight during pregnancy?

what do you mean when you say “junk food”? what foods specifically are you craving?

what do you mean when you say “healthy food”? what foods specifically make you feel like vomiting?

Re: How to not gain extra weight during pregnancy?

Great Question! Well, during the day I eat regular breakfast like toast-eggs, pancakes (store bought), or toast-butter and drink tea. For lunch and diner, I eat normal desi saalan with 2 pita rotis or handmade roti some days. I snack on fruit here and there during the day. I don’t feel like eating these things at all (they make me nauseous). Actually, during the day I’m so nauseous I don’t even feel like looking at anything but I stuff it down for the sake of the baby.

The night is the whole another story. I crave the stuff that I don’t even feel like eating during the day. I crave stuff like cookies, brownies, ice-cream, pizza, chocolates, candy, chips, etc. I have already made 2 trips to taco-bell in the past two nights at 3 AM. After taco-bell, I went to walmart to get brownies :(. I make better tacos/burritos/brownies at home but for some reason the outside fast food and junk seems more attracting right now. It also doesn’t help that I’m at my mom’s and she’s the type who thinks I need to “eat for two” so, she just tells me keep eating don’t worry about the weight, it’ll come off :/.

Re: How to not gain extra weight during pregnancy?

Eat filling snacks that are healthy but tasty like chana chaat, nuts etc. Maybe low fat snacks like popcorn, jello, pretzels…but watch the quantity. Drink water as it fills u up and prevents overeating. If you start getting craving, try brushing ur teeth…it’s said to prevent them.

Re: How to not gain extra weight during pregnancy?

OMG, I so know how you feel, I just went thru a VERY tough pregnancy myself right from the beginning, nausea, headaches, loss of appetite, bed rest, even ended up in the hospital in my 8th month due to exhasution, you name it I had to encounter…

Thankfully I didn’t gain that much weight, but I know if you don’t watch it can get out of hands :frowning:

Best advice I can give you is to eater smaller meals even if you dont feel that hungry, that is to avoid the late night snacking; I would get so hungry at nights too, so I always kept these items in the fridge. i.e. fruit cups, veggie sticks such as celery sticks, carrots, cherry tomatoes, yogurt, or when you get really hungry eat a sandwich with chicken salad or egg salad. I always keep junk food away from my home, so if I don’t see it I won’t eat it, I did have out of the ordinary sweet cravings now and then but a good friend of mine who is also a baker would bring me goodies every few weeks like couple of cookies or a nanimo bar, so that way I didn’t alone binge on just junk food but also kept the portion control in check

Good luck and congratulations

Re: How to not gain extra weight during pregnancy?

why are you forcing yourself to eat food you don’t feel like? you’re growing a HUMAN, the increasing hormones are understandably making you feel ill and your body is going through immense changes. respect the process, and stop eating massive amounts of food that make you ill. your child is taking nutrition from you. he/she is not going to starve. i went through the first 5.5 months of my pregnancy on chicken corn soup and 7-layer wraps from taco bell- because those were the only things i could eat without throwing up immediately, and i went on to have a very healthy 9.5 lb’er, masha’Allah. just relax and go with the flow. if you’re craving fast food, maybe your body is telling you it needs carbs. find healthy carbs to eat and go to town. stop eating eggs and rotis and whatever else- and don’t eat for two! you only need 300 extra calories a day.

Re: How to not gain extra weight during pregnancy?

eating healthy is important - I learned it the hard way. I found out last week at 8 months preg that I have gestational diabetes - not something I wanted to hear. Training myself now to eat healthier was a challenge so start sooner than later.

You are still in your first trimester - train yourself to eat well a majority of the time. Indulgences here and there are not going to harm you or your little one but also try to eat a well balanced diet. Like SGC said, eat what you can keep down. Try to find the healthiest thing out there …but if it means seven layer wraps it is what it is. As long as its not brownies and coke for breakfast/lunch/dinner, you’ll be fine.

Lastly - know this phase will (hopefully) pass!

Re: How to not gain extra weight during pregnancy?

If you have PCOS you are at greater risk for developing gestational diabetes, so you do need to be careful about sugar and carbs IF they seem to be affecting you. I wouldn’t worry so much about the number of pounds, as I would about finding healthy food you feel comfortable eating.

What you eat during the day seems good, but I don’t understand how you’re managing to eat it if it makes you feel so sick! Consider trying non-desi style foods – sandwiches and grilled foods that may go down easier. The cravings for sweets are often actually cravings for grains, so try having oatmeal (sweetened with brown sugar and cinnamon) or a bowl of cereal. Keep nuts and dried fruits handy to munch on. If you want fast food and food from outside, just go for it, but try to keep the quantities low. Or try to go to restaurants with higher quality foods. Let yourself have what you want, just keep it balanced. If you fight the cravings too much you will drive yourself crazy.

Re: How to not gain extra weight during pregnancy?

^^ Ditto!

Also try to stay away from food outside your home at odd hours, it will help you control your junk food craving.

You r takin phenergen for nausea!!! Its an allergy med… Works as an anti histamine… Or ifu wanna put yourself to sleep due to insomnia… Has some very serious side effects.

Did ure Dr prescribe that to u?!

Thanks everyone! I’m trying really hard to avoid the cravings :frowning: The food I eat during the day (normal roti/saalan), I eat it for the baby. Sadly, don’t have the strength or willpower to avoid the cravings for the baby. I’ve tried grilled stuff and salads/fruits…but nothing feels good; although, I still eat it. Hopefully, I can lower the portions of these nightly cravings. Last night, I finished a whole pint of ice-cream. It didn’t feel wrong at that time, felt like heaven actually! But, I feel guilty now :frowning:

I’m annoyed at myself and tend to eat more when I’m annoyed/stressed. So basically, I’m in a loop-hole :frowning:

Yeah, it’s an antihistamine but it’s also given as an anti-emetic. I was prescribed Zofran at first but that didn’t do anything at all for me. So, my Dr gave me a low dose of this. I know it’s Category C but Zofran had no effect on me :(. Also, I only take it some days when the nausea/vomiting is unbearable, not everyday.
