Identify the real WILL of the God and then struggle to get close to be what He wants you to be.
Sure He is close to us, but are we close to Him?
Quran clearly differentiates between a Muslim and a Momin.
Quran at times criticized the former but always praises the later.
And there is a major difference betwee the two.
Kaaba is a Masjid, but every Masjid is not the Kaaba.
(Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as) said: God has made faith (Iman) superior to belief (Islam) just as Kaba has been made superior to the sacred mosque)
Similarly, every Momin is a Muslim but every Muslim is not a Momin.
Momin is one who recognizes the WILL of the God, and upon realization, completely submits him/herself to the WILL of the God. This is when you realise your closeness to God.

Allah (swt) says in the Quran that if you obey HIS prophet (saw), HE would love you. Obeying the prophet means to obey him, encourage to others what he encouraged and discourage the bad deeds that he discouraged.

We need to do as much of the following as possible in order to get close to Allah (swt). (extracted from a hadith)**
Fear Allah, be contented. Desire for others what we desire for our self. Do good to others. Engage much in Allah's praise. Having good manners. Adore Allah as if you see Him and He see you. Observing Allah's commands. Bathing our self from impurities. Not wronging our self or any other creature. Having mercy on our self and others. Seeking forgiveness of Allah as much as we can. If we do not complain to any fellow creature. Having trust in Allah. Keeping our self pure of sins as much as we can. Loving what Allah and His messenger love. Not loosing our temper with any of our fellow humans. Avoiding forbidden actions. Guarding our chastity. Not uncovering our fellow creatures' faults. Tears, humility, being patient in adversity, misfortunes and illness. Gentle manners, modesty and patience. Charity,generosity and kindness to relatives. Patience in adversity and misfortunes.

Good answer
To know that God is close to us, means that we will be conscious of Him. That means we should be in awe of that fact, which means we will correct our behaviour, rather we will not put ourselves near things that will cause a potential for bad behaviour even.
To associate with the community of people who love God who do everything to please Him. This will keep us close to Him.

**Ten ways to increase love of Allah (s.w.t) in Heart
**
Ibn al-Qaiyim mentioned ten causes that result in Allah’s love for His slave and the slave’s love for his Lord. [These ten are:]
First, reciting the Qur’an while pondering over its meanings and what is meant by it.
Second, getting closer to Allah by performing voluntary deeds after completing obligatory deeds. This is as is stated in a Hadith Qudsi: “My slave continues getting closer to Me by performing voluntary deeds until I love him.” [al-Bukhari]
Third, continual remembrance of Allah under all circumstances, with one’s tongue, heart and actions. The extent of one’s love of Allah is determined by this.
Fourth, giving precedence to what He loves over what you love when you are overtaken by your desires.
Fifth, the heart being avid of Allah’s Names, and Attributes and the heart roaming in that garden of knowledge.
Sixth, observing Allah’s kindness, goodness and bounties, both hidden and open.
Seventh, and this is the most wonderful, the heart being soft, subdued and meek before Allah.
Eighth, being alone with Allah during the time when the Lord descends during the last portion of the night while reading His Book and ending that by asking for forgiveness and repenting.
Ninth, sitting with the beloved and sincere, benefitting from the most fruitful of their speech. And not to speak unless speaking is more beneficial and you know that it will improve your state and be beneficial to others.
Tenth, remaining away from every cause that comes between the heart and Allah.
These ten causes take the lovers to the station of true love and bring them to their Beloved.

^well, most if not all of the secular nations belong to the first world and Atheists sure are living, laughing, and progressing. But dont you agree there is something missing?
One example, studies have shown that a person with faith in God exhibits more patience, strength, and zeal. It is scientificaly proven that a person with faith in God lives much less anx*ious and less stressed life.

For me, life without knowing your Lord and trying to get to close to Him is like fish without water.

He has 10 full time researchers... just to find out best way for living prosper and healthy life..
You would be surprised to know how close their findings are to our teachings..

If you have ever heard of the expression "you don't know what you are missing" then the greatest embodiment for this is the phrase Nearness to God.
Those who are near to God live miraculous lives ... have you ever found how you just don't have time to do things? Well those who are near to God are living in the moment, they are able to do many things with least effort and things that go not to plan they are equipped to deal with psychologically. They are financially independent in the best possible way, i.e. they believe they don't need money even when they have little are able to give it away without any attachment. Those who are close to God are able to resonate with their environment and appreciate life in a way that others only seek to satisfy with worldly things. Can you think of the bliss of getting a target completed at work? Now magnify that and put it on constant play and that is the feeling of a person who is close to God, in this life ... the Afterlife holds much more treasures.

With due respect to everything, if u see it rationally and neutrally, u'll find there is hardly any difference b/w a believer and an atheist ...both live their life very much the same way....A believer has his God to lean upon, an atheist has no one to fear !!

i don't understand how's trust on God and no fear of anyone can be the same?
I believe, a believer fears no one but Allah but an atheist might fear anyone but God.

questions you ask hareem. I like bookworms reply, He is close to us whether or not we acknowledge it. I think of it as a frequency that we tune in to feel His presence at times much more forcibly than others. Our antennas sadly arent always working splendidly enough, they say if you keep your frequency right sooner or later you will get a clearer picture.
