hi guysss… had a prb and thot who to share with than with the lovely ppl of GS :slight_smile: i m 33 w pregnant and was wondering how to clean my bed matress? have been married for 4 yrs never got it cleaned cus i just dinno how?? :S now with the baby comin i m concerned abt the hygenie of the matress.. i m sure its unhygenic and full of germs so wot is the best way to have it cleaned and disinfected? i dun think the laundry ppl can dry clean such a big king size matress? wot do u all suggest?? thanks in advance kisses

i dont see why it needs to be cleaned since you always have bedsheets on it...

but in any case

u can air it out when its summer time, (unless its already sunny where u are), and leave it there for some time

or u can steam clean it with a steamer. (will have to buy it first though :D)

We have mattress covers so it makes things easier. But you could use disinfecting spray or scrub with a sponge and detergent. Then buy a mattress cover! :)

We have matress covers that we wash regularly too. But you should still clean it regularly because of the dust mites etc. You should also flip the mattress every few months to prolong its life.

First vacuum it. Then mix a mild detergent with water until it gets suds on top. Then get a towel and get the suds on there (try not to make it very wet) and clean the mattress. Then get some clean water with a little dettol in it put a sponge in it, wring the sponge really well and go over the mattress again. Basically the mattress should only get damp on the surface, don't let it absorb water.

This is best done in the summer on a hot day when you can open the windows and let it dry easily.

The ladies on how clean is your house vacuum the mattresses to get rid of some dustmites.

I think steam clean is your best bet to kill all the dustmites and bacteria. Otherwise use a foam fabric cleaner that u jjust rub off, followed by an antiseptic spray.

Are you sure it needs to be cleaned this much?

thx guys for ur response... hmmmm.. different ideas and solutions.. i will see wot best i can do. i do change bedsheets but u know bed is a place where u do ALOT of things... plus every mnth we women have periods so i was just concerned abt the hygenie.. no matter wot u do blood/sperm can v easily absorb in the mattress..
btw wot is a matress cover??? :S u r not referring to the bed sheets rite?? even i was thinkkin of vaccumin it... lets see...

sorry for my ignorance .. wots fabric cleaner.. never hrd of it. i live in dubai.. dunno if i can find it. but we do have dettol surface spray here but thaz not even for mattress... dunno if i cud use that instead??

there is the matress, then there is the matress pad (cover) that goes over the matress.. look it up on google or ikea.. u will get the idea.

i go a step further and put a fitted sheet on top and then the bedsheet. keeps the bedsheets from moving and also forms as a cover for the matress cover :D

just go to any grocery store and look for fabric cleaner in the cleaning aisle with detregents etc.. there should be loads of variety .. i lived in arabia and they had them there so dubai must have it too.

But they give you 12 year warranty. why you want to change it in 5 years then ?

Look in a large supermarket, in the cleaning products aisle. It can be in an aerosol can, it's a foam. If you can't find it, look for car upholstery cleaner foam.

See if you can find febreeze anti-bacterial spray, you can use on fabrics.

I wouldn't personally use the dettol surface spray bcos that's something you have to wipe off after you use it, can't be done on fabrics.

Check Ikea for mattress protectors and use one from now on, under the bedsheet that you sleep on top of.

I get allergies so I vacuum my mattress every few weeks and then flip it over. Before I put a mattress cover over it, I have a much thinner foam sheet in between.

P.S. I never thought about cleaning my mattress...:o

You need to vacum mattress for bed bugs and mites which can be there despite changing sheets.

You can also put the mattress under the sun

Use Lysol antibacterial wipes - on the surface

Change your mattress pad after every couple of years

I know this is gonna sound weird but I just left the plastic cover on that the mattress came with ... and every now and then I take a piece of cloth wet with soapy water and go over the plastic cover....... cover the mattress with a mattress cover, then a fitted sheet and then the sheets..... talk abt being paranoid ....

now wots a foam sheet? as it is, i m confused with mattress cover and wot it looks like and now comes foam sheet.... faint cud someone b a sweetheart and put up a pic of both these.. i tried on google... but to no avail :(

O M G !!!! i cant believe it. so u put 3 kinds of sheets there !! double faint !!!! wowwwww! wot dus ur hubby think abt this... dun u hear the plastic sound while u change sides while sleepin???
so u mean u put the mattress cover over the plastic rite??? but u wipe the plastic cover before puttin the other 3 stuff?

lolzzzzzz trust me never did i! as i said 4 freakin yrs i have never put it in sun even! thaz badddddddddddddddddd!! and now with a baby comin i m really concerned. i think we both need to change our attitudes :P atleast for now i think i will put it in sun and flip it every few months. u shud do that too. :)
