There are soooo many things to consider, its my last year and im a bit frustrated!!
how do i decide which field will suit me best???
Re: how should i choose a medical speciality?
what do u like to do?
what motivates you?
Re: how should i choose a medical speciality?
as part of my phd studies i examine premature infants,i really love my work, and all the docs there r so nice, but doesnt help me making a decision.
i know wht i dunt like surgery/anesthesiology!!!
Re: how should i choose a medical speciality?
Maybe you should postpone your decision for a little bit. Get some more work experience, try out some new things that are inline with your choices and then make an educated decision.
My sister is a med student and she is lean towards endo. The reason she selected endo is not b/c she likes endo more than other specialities, but b/c there are more endo jobs at more places, giving her more flexibility.
Another friend of mine just completed nuro surgery speciality from Dartmouth and he is finding that his options are fairly limited to where he can go.
The point that I am trying to make is that there are other factors besides 'what you like' and 'what you don't like', economics, location, etc. all should play a part in your decision.
Good Luck,

what you like and what motivates you are among the initial questions that need to be answered, jobs, opportunities and all are the next set of questions.
In many cases it takes a diff person with diff motivations to become a specialist in geriatrics than one who goes in plastic surgery, and even witin plastic surgery, ppl speacilizing in burns or reconstructive surgery e.g. after a mastectomy tend to be different than those doing augmentation and enhacements.
