I was thinking things happening in the world like Tsunami or earthquakes, fires in the house how prepare are we? I really don’t have Fire safety box in my house to save my documents. I am thinking what things we need to do to get our selves prepared. Beccause I even don’t know how to swin if flooding appears
But lately I have been thinking of doing two three things like taking self defense course or learn to swim or buy a fire safety box.
So how prepare are you to save your and others lives in disasters? ![]()
Re: How prepare are you for disasters?
lol.. do i have to plan for disasters ? .. Why i pay so much taxes to fed's.. its their job not mine !
Firenze but feds will not be able to save our important documents or our lives in time. Its not about the house but its about yourself.![]()
Let me explain it more clear like if you are in an office do you know where are exit doors or if you are in your house do you know how to escape in emergency.Do you have any plans?
Better than Bush..............:D

If you're counting on FEMA to come to your aid, you'd be disappointed. :p
I don't think i'm prepared for any kind of disaster. Always tell myself to be less dependant on parishables (Internet/Electricity, etc.), but it is just too hard.
Personally, i think Amish people are the most prepared for disasters. Atleast they'll be patient and make do with natural resources. :D
On a small scale, say like housefire and stuff, we all ought to have back-up plans. Like a bank locker for important documents, a digital backup maybe, or at the very least a fireproof safe or something.
Re: How prepare are you for disasters?
i have been seriously thinking about that fire safe box as well. maybe this weekend i'll go pick one up.

Where i work, we have the best fire, flood systems, environmental systems in place , coz its federal research facility,....at home, i can jump to a tree hanging next to the door.. and on the floor..
ON documents & money: that's why we have banks, i don't receive any statements, tax records, financial stuff in mail .. all of them are electronic.. ..
What's left.. hmm.. yeh my stockpile of books, clothes,.. but come on people its a disastor after all ..i have to loose something ..so i will leave books, clothes, & my laptop behind.. But anyway everything is insured.. ..
done ...,, i need a disastar in NY these days, .. i want break..too much work :(
Re: How prepare are you for disasters?
We've had a few days of a really bad winterstorm here last month, so people were expecting power outtage and bad road conditions so we went and got some extra groceries, water gallons, candles, an extra gas cylinder for the grill outside... I filled the tubs with water, charged our cell phones, etc.
Nothing happened but I felt safe.
We don't have a fire extinguisher but do have fore alarms all over.
Re: How prepare are you for disasters?
oh thats my favorite topic.... I get paid to tell people how they should be prepared for a disastsr so yeah I consider myself very much prepared with my 72 hour emergency kit for home and car in case I have to evacuate or shelter-in-place.
Everytime I go to a new building, I look around to see the fire exits and make a mental note of them.. i am so used to it now that it has become a second nature!!
For people who mentioned candles, please dun overstock candles, rather invest in finger touch flashlights with a few extra batteries in hand.. here is a list of things that I have in my kit:
1) 3 day supply of food - non-perishable such as canned goods (with of course a manual can opener)
2) water (3 gallons)
3)Flash light - 6 in 1 (compass, thermometer, whistle, storage,magnifying glass)
4)lots of extra batteries that I replace every six months
5)First aid kit
6)Dust mask
7)Wrench/pliers/duct tape
8)personal sanitary stuff
9)extra pair of clothes/socks/shoes
10)Thermal blanket
11) water proof matches
12)copy of all my documents
13)some cash and an old cell phone (In my state, you can dial 911 from your old cell phone and it would go through even if its not activated)
I have it all in a backpack and in case I have to leave the house for an emergency.. I pick up my bag and out my door!!!
I work in emergency preparedness so I do have other comprehensive ready to go kits to set up shelters and such.. I didnt even go in those details so I highly recommend having a basic kit for your family.. if someone needs more information I can definitely help you out!
If you have older parents or grandparents, make sure you have an extra prescription medicine, extra pair of glasses, hearing aid or anything that they use on regular basis... there are legal ways to obtain prescription medicine in advance!
oh man I can go on and on about personal emergency preparedness.. point is it's IMPORTANT and considering the time we are living in, we should always be prepared for a disaster!
Very nice post GTG since I am thinking seriously about those disasters so I might have this kit. Thanks

how big is this backpack?
i think she's going to pakistan, couple of suitcases i guess.
Re: How prepare are you for disasters?
well, honestly speaking and as someone who has packed tons of stuff for camping and hiking, this is not going to fit in one regular backpack, the 3 gallons of water, 3 days food would take up huge space.
it can all fit in one of the large camping/hiking style backpacks, but if someone things they can use there backpack from school...forget about it

Not prepared at all but good post.
how big is this backpack?
I am sorry that it came across as everything in the backpack.. 3 gallons of water is not in backpack.. for that, I just have emergency drinking water packets and for emergency consumption, the advice is not to drink water first 24 hours unless sick or injured, or in desert conditions.. therefore approximately, 8 oz packets are usually kept in the backpack.
3 gallons water and 3 days food supplies is a part of 72 hour emergency kit.. it doesn't have it to be in your backpack!!!
Re: How prepare are you for disasters?
heh, thanks for clarifying, i just wanted to save ppl the effort of trying to stuff 3 gallons of water in their backpack :)
