how old

Do you believee the earth is, and the universe?

Re: how old

Depends on the Holy Book of choice. It is my understanding according to the Bible, the earth has been around for 10,000 years. Ramayana happened 8000 years ago. Do back of the envelop calculation, add 2000 yres, ad you get convergence with the Bible.

Got to find out what the Creationists and Intelligenct Design people think. That's all she wrote.

Re: how old

Bible- about 6000 years

What do you believe?

Re: how old

Somewhere I read the earth is about a billion years old. Universe -no idea - my guess 10 billion yrs old.

Re: how old

Earth- 4.6 byo

Universe - 14 byo

Re: how old

Is this your guess or is it from a source? We appear to be of same order of magnitude in our estimates

Re: how old

It's what is is scientifically accepted today, could change based on further experimentation, discovery

Re: how old

gazillion years old.

Re: how old

what does it matter what do i think. it is a accepted scientific fact and they have numbers for both of the dates.

Southie: there is no dates mentioned in ramayana, it follows a yug system and current yug i.e. kalyug is supposed to last 4.2 billion years according to some calculations.

My question is what was there before the birth of universe?

Kitaab al Tawheed, Sheikh Sadooq, ch. 28, narration # 3 **

A man asked Ameerul Momineen about when Allah (azw) came into being?

Hazrat Ali (RA) said; “When did He (God) not exist so that it may be asked when did He (begin to) exist? My Lord preceded the beginning and is without any begining. He will remian after the end without an end.”

No Idea :cobra:

Re: how old

Get an Idea.

Re: how old

Well from religion perspective , here is what rig veda says
“At first was neither Being nor Nonbeing.
There was not air nor yet sky beyond.
What was wrapping? Where? In whose protection?
Was Water there, unfathomable deep?
There was no death then, nor yet deathlessness;
of night or day there was not any sign.
The One breathed without breath by its own impulse.
Other than that was nothing at all.
Darkness was there, all wrapped around by darkness,
and all was Water indiscriminate, Then
that which was hidden by Void, that One, emerging,
stirring, through power of Ardor, came to be.
In the beginning Love arose,
which was primal germ cell of mind.
The Seers, searching in their hearts with wisdom,
discovered the connection of Being in Nonbeing.
A crosswise line cut Being from Nonbeing.
What was described above it, what below?
Bearers of seed there were and mighty forces,
thrust from below and forward move above.
Who really knows? Who can presume to tell it?
Whence was it born? Whence issued this creation?
Even the Gods came after its emergence.
Then who can tell from whence it came to be?
That out of which creation has arisen,
whether it held it firm or it did not,
He who surveys it in the highest heaven,
He surely knows -- or maybe He does not!”
Some other place it also says that before the ultimate creation even time didnt exist so no point pondering how long things didnt exist.

basically the common belief is the 3 levels (Lok) of creation get created and destroyed, and again created and destroyed over and over again. like big bang when things got created and at one point it will shrink to its original form and everything will cease to exist and then big bang will happen again and same cycle will keep on repeating.

to make myself clear i dont try to find scientific answers in religious texts.

Re: how old

Based on that quote of the Rig Ved ... I'm not surprised ... however that is not to say that it doesn't carry truth ...

Re: how old

:smack:

not all people “accept” scientific fact.

BUt if there is an explanation for everything in this world and rationality behind existence and being, then God had to come from somewhere too.

what?

Re: how old

my question still stands, what was there before the universe?

Re: how old

Rationality is a relative term that varies from person to person. I’ve got the satisfactory answer for these confusing questions from the reply of Hazrat Ali (RA), therefore I don’t require complex and ever changing scientific theories. These theories never satisfy anyone, because they pose more questions instead of giving answers to the questions.

Re: how old

The answer is God

Re: how old

Only god knows

Re: how old

in material/physical sense, both religious and scientific answers are the same. NOTHING
